Chicago dispatch reports a coal shortage in Pittsburgh as a three day cold spell exhausts supplies. Railroads are accused of aiding a supply corner as thousands of families face fuel hunger and factories risk closure. Twenty collieries and four washeries sit idle while ten collieries and four washeries run short due to miner nonattendance.
Ed. Gay a wealthy Matthews merchant was found dead in his burning store in Augusta area. He had accompanied an unknown man to obtain change, the stranger forced him to open the safe and took 12,000 dollars before setting the building on fire.
