A local group known as Booth Army plans a Christmas cheer drive tomorrow in memory of the birth of the Nazarene. The effort seeks to bring light to one hundred poor homes in Josht with donations and community support.
Volunteers at 611 Jefferson Street organize Christmas baskets for about a hundred families as charity workers greet poor women with hopeful smiles. The scene reflects the season’s spirit of goodwill and sisterly care amid poverty and need.
The Italian Co operative Society of South Chicago held its annual election last evening. Joseph Von will be the president and Vincent Carnaghi was elected manager with Anthony Carnaghi as assistant. The society, founded in 1901, now has 165 members and provides for sick Italians in the city. An erection in 1906 produced a two story building at 611 South Chicago street serving as meeting place and hall.
Joseph H. Dumermoth prominent Joliet citizen and longtime Knights Templar member died last evening at 6. Funeral services for the family will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 at the First Presbyterian church with Joliet Commandery No. 4 Knights Templar in charge. Interment at Oakwood cemetery. He was born August 24 1846 and leaves widow and four children Fred Gertrude Mary and Josephine.
Steel for the Santa Fe Subway at Cass and Collins streets is expected to arrive soon and be installed early next year. Progress hinges on the elevator project at Washington and Jefferson streets. Santa Fe says it is ready to proceed, while Chicago and Alton is not moving swiftly.
Mayor John R. Cronin forwards a formal note to city department chiefs thanking them for past year cooperation and hoping for harmonious relations in the coming year. He also extends Christmas greetings.

Nicholas O Mara was struck by a north bound Chicago and Joliet street car near the Fox plant on North Collins street last night at about 10 o'clock. He sustained a badly bruised left leg and was taken to St Joseph's hospital where doctors expected a short recovery. The motorman did not see him until the car was within a few feet.

The Parker damage case against the Chicago & Afton railroad ended without a verdict as the jury could not agree. In Herrin Illinois December 24 an explosion in Chicago and Carterville Coal Company mine A killed several men and endangered about 300 others. Open lamps carried by the engineer and crew ignited gas in an abandoned room, four bodies recovered, others believed lifeless, rescue work ongoing as families gather at the mine mouth.
Dr William Richards of Richards Street is in critical condition after an appendectomy at Silver Cross hospital. The operation followed a Sunday to Monday decline in health, with Dr George M Peaks the attending physician. Mrs Fred Addison Rice, the doctor’s daughter from Peoria, has been summoned.
George Gurney died this morning at his home 505 Union Street of appendicitis at age 77 years 6 months. Funeral planned for Monday with time to be announced. He leaves a widow and seven children including Mrs Frank Lesh and Mrs Mary Myers of Clarion Iowa Elmer Arno Otto Mrs Charles Pohlmann and Mrs Albert Lichtenwalter of Jackson.
Mrs. Lydia A. Culver, resident of Buell Avenue, sustained slight injuries after slipping on an icy walkway from her home to the avenue. Her son Charles Culver said no serious harm, though neighbors feared more. Mrs. Culver, pioneer resident and widow of John J. Culver, was considered shaken but recovering.
Elmer Paimer files suit against the Royal Neighbors of America claiming $1,000 life insurance due after the death of his wife Minnie Paimer a member of Emerson Camp Manhattan. Mrs Paimer died April 9 1909.
David Hirsch aged 11 sustained a severe leg injury when a coaster’s steering gear failed and crashed into a curb at Western Avenue and Center Street. He was treated at Fahmer’s drug store and later moved to McGuffin Hospital. other riders escaped uninjured. He lives with parents at 154 Comstock Street.
Secretary Hodgdon of the Industrial committee received a letter from Mr. Woodworth Clum of Rochester New York president of the National Association of Commercial Executives. He extends season greetings to Joliet citizens and notes the upcoming convention in Grand Rapids aims to be the greatest in the association. Hodgdon was appointed to oversee Illinois Iowa Minnesota and Wisconsin membership.
United States Steed Trust will spend about 100000 dollars to improve and enlarge its Gary and South Chicago plants in the coming year, funding expansion and modernization to boost production capacity.
United States Steel plans to invest about $100 million next year in its steelmaking region. Gary and South Chicago, Ind, receive portions for new buildings and equipment. Joliet may miss out as expansion spreads to Gary, South Chicago, and the Calumet area. Joliet’s share remains uncertain. The move is the second major expansion since Gary’s development.
At Central Presbyterian Joliet a Christmas tree party saw Sunday school children bring gifts for city youngsters. Donations totaled $45 to buy provisions, clothing, toys, books, stockings, coal orders, and food baskets for the needy. Dr Yost praised the participation of the little helpers.
The parsonage of the First Baptist church is under strict quarantine due to illness of Paul and Peters, son and daughter of Rev. G E Peters, who are ill with diphtheria. Dr Peters of New Lenox will supervise the case to prevent spread.
