Ambassador Meyer in Rome reports Italy will join the blockade of Venezuelan ports. The state department says a formal reply from European allies is not yet received, so Roosevelt will not respond to arbitration offer until then. Berlin and London plan to outline conditions for arbitration acceptance to align with the others.
Chicago December 22 the central committee of the Union Labor party tendered the mayoralty nomination to Clarence Darrow noted as lead counsel for miners in coal strike cases. Darrow, elected to the legislature on a public ownership ticket, is the sole party return.
The fishing schooner Manhassett arrived in Boston with ten survivors from the missing Louise Creary and Frank Palmer. Of twenty five men aboard, ten were drowned and five died of exposure after the gale off the Massachusetts coast. Survivors were saved by a Palmer small boat and endured extreme cold and thirst before rescue.

A black horse owned by Cudahy Packing Company escaped from an office setting off a chaotic chase through Ottawa Washington and Joliet streets. After a tumble at McFadden's stable it dodged traffic before colliding with a telegraph pole and finally being recaptured. The horse sustained only minor injuries.
A stubborn house fire at 646 Cass Street Saturday night damaged the building and ruined its contents. Chief Paige and crews from stations 1 3 and 4 fought the blaze for about thirty minutes starting after 9 pm. The chief estimates 75 dollars to repair the structure and 100 dollars loss to contents, with the building insured but contents uninsured.
