The Pats suit returns to the Supreme Court after a circuit and high court path, ordered a new trial on a technicality. A.J. Bates sold fence machine patents to Bates Machine Co. and Consolidated Steel & Wire Co. for eighty thousand dollars, later seeking $125,000 with a verdict of $45,800 plus interest. A four day session opens at 10:30 am in East Washington Street for fifty salesmen of the Calendar Co. to receive practical instruction. John Lambert presides at the opening with H W Cies and Mr Barkow welcoming the group. Demonstrations on packing sample calendars and selling techniques follow led by Gerlach and others. Evening smokers, a Sheldon school address, and a Friday dinner mark the program ending Saturday noon with the men dispersing January 2 to begin work.
Newton C. Dougherty, a former Peoria schools superintendent and convict at Illinois State Penitentiary, tells the Peoria Star he has no special privileges. He praises Warden Murphy and Deputy Warden Simms, describes meals, a 20 000 volume library, and says most inmates are decent men misled by drink, with about 300 “bad” ones.
Judge Marshall overruled a motion for a new trial in Matilda Walker v. Chicago and Joliet Electric Railway. Plaintiff sought damages of 5000 for injuries alleged after a Hickory street car suddenly started, and the case was started weeks earlier with a loss for the plaintiff.
John Hashington reports under indictment for Schottes Paint Shop burglary, with Jack Harrington, long sought in Joliet for the May robbery, arrested in Morris and brought to the city. Harrington, linked with Edward Talbot who is jailed, faces arraignment. Talbot was acquitted on a separate charge. Harrington’s long criminal record includes manslaughter and past hold up cases, with evasions before capture.
The Illinois Supreme Court today affirmed appellate rulings in three cases. Elmer B. Jones vs Chicago Rock Island Pacific Railroad Co upheld $1,600 for Jones. Lawrence Koshenski vs Illinois Steel Co upheld $2,500 for Koshinski. Christopher Pronskevitch vs Chicago and Alton Railroad affirmed the appellate decision.
First Presbyterian Church of New Castle sent a unanimous call to Rev Robert Yost, pastor of Central Presbyterian for two and a half years. Yost says a call was extended but no formal reply has been given pending Central Pres decisions and council with officials.
Special to Republican reports Newton Dougherty now in county jail awaiting help to clear up funds shortage. Friends say he remains urbane and unchanged by prison life. Investigation expected to yield sensational developments with Dougherty to be returned to toilet soon.
Miss Nellie Mae Dean of Aux Sal and Martin J. Edmondson of Siga Ill were married at 10:30 AM in the parsonage of the M E church with Ref A Py performing the ceremony. Mr and Mrs Merley, brother in law, attended.
