A person named Kate Ryan was crushed under a wheel of a train at Rock Island Depot at 6 45 this morning and sustained injuries that may be fatal. The incident occurred as the train arrived at the depot.
Miss Katherine Ryan was injured when a freight train backed toward a passenger coach at the Rock Island depot. She became wedged under the truck as commuters rushed to board the moving train. Rail crews spent fifty five minutes freeing her while she remained conscious and urged haste. She later lapsed into unconsciousness and doctors planned amputation of her left leg pending her condition.
Miss Ryan a 21 year old Chicago stenographer was struck when a Wheel rolled over her left foot during a first rotation and another wheel drew the limb beneath the coach frame. She lives at 113 Seeser Street with her widowed mother Mrs Michael Ryan. May 1. Her sister Miss Ryan works as a clerk at Gerlach Barklow Co calendar factory and brother Patrick M Ryan works at the steel mills. She has a large circle of friends and attended a party last night with several young people.
Tony Pilleto drew a revolver and frightened a dozen men on Collings Street after saloons closed. Officer Murphy arrested him. this morning he pleaded guilty to carrying concealed weapons, disorderly conduct, and intoxication. He paid a $20.75 fine. the revolver was confiscated.
The Scott street mill of the American Wire & Steel Company sends the first twenty five car load of wire and nails to the Pacific Coast. The massive shipment, weighing hundreds of tons, travels to San Francisco and is described as Joliet’s first single consignment of this material by any railroad.
The condition of Jarvis Thompson, hospitalized with exposure, remains the same. His feet and hands are frostbitten but not frozen as first thought. the entire left side of his face and both eyelids are frozen. Doctors fear blood poisoning could threaten his eyesight. His brother Wood has been sent for and is expected to attend Joliet and visit Thompson.
Mrs Raz, a mother, conducted her own court case seeking wages she claimed were due for her son Harry Posner from the Colgrove family at New Lenox farm during 1908. Testimony cited alleged mistreatment and the boy’s wish to stay with the Colgroves, who provided room and board.
An on site accident at the cinder pile near the Steel Works killed switchman Andy Horney of 513 Chase Avenue. He was 32 and well as of a wife and one child. Coroner Wunderlich will hold an inquest at 7 pm. No witnesses. he fell while attempting a coupling when his foot slipped on the rail, his head crushed between car bumpers.
Tonight at the Steel Works club Ramos Spanish orchestra appears. Frederick Irving, baritone former leading man with Madame Schumann-Heink, supports the ensemble. Ethel Freeman Eva Odell first violins Winifred McDonald second violin Regina cornet Marcella Fox cello Eva Henning piano.
The membership contest at Central Presbyterian Gym is extended to December 31 after many requests. Officials had planned to close it on December 18 but ongoing interest from potential new members prompted the extension.
Pres. Jordan of the commercial club seeks to grow the membership to five hundred by January 1. The club currently has over four hundred members.
Joliet High School basketball fans are urged to support the local team as they host Wendell Phillips High School of Chicago tomorrow at 4 15 in the Central gym. City backers are essential to the season’s success and the crowd is promised lively half time entertainment.
Work has begun on the Rockdale station depot with duties for a combined passenger depot and freight house. The freight switch is installed and the foundation is under way while officials have not issued statements about Rockdale train service.
Charles Curry was arrested last evening by Policeman McGee after he started trouble with a gang near Bluff and Jackson streets. Before Judge Allen he pleaded guilty to drunk and disorderly conduct and was fined 8.30 dollars.
Merchants report active monitoring of shoppers as shoplifting yields little success this year. Several incidents led to offenders being caught and escorted out after returning goods and department manager talks. Private detectives are hired to arrest offenders during the expected next week crowds.
Rockford hosts the Illinois State Grange annual meeting attended by about one hundred delegates. Robert Eaton of the executive board and Miss Maude Young of Elwood join Master Oliver Wilson as speakers addressing primary, mine, taxation, public lands, and other laws. Sessions run through the week.
Reports a proposed two track high speed Joliet to Chicago electric line to link with Chicago elevated rails. Chicago Joliet Electric Railway formed with stock of 100000 and potential absorption of Joliet & Southern Traction. Backed plans include connection to East St. Louis and possible purchase of Chicago & Joliet. estimated price rises to about 4 million.
The Elks minstrel event raised funds totaling 705.88 dollars for the Elks Children’s Home and the Swedish Orphans’ Home. Proceeds benefited both homes, boosting their charities and community support.
