Dispatches report Castro resisting backing down to England while ready to arbitrate with Venezuela. US and France show against tying Venezuela revenue to Germany and England. relations with Venezuela and England broken off as Port of Spain reports a Venezuelan diplomatic withdrawal. England asks Castro to deposit 30000 dollars as proof of good faith for arbitration and seizure of customs during talks.
Washington December 13. Amid Wall Street panic from scarce speculative funds the New York speculative community again appealed to Secretary Shaw for relief. Shaw responds he will do nothing more to aid the situation. He says banks and speculative interests are responsible and must work out their own salvation without treasury department aid.
Fresno December 13. The largest winery in the state, St George's, was destroyed by a blaze last night. Loss estimated at 250000 dollars.
Vienna reports three hundred vessels in the lower Danube crushed or sunk by giant ice blocks. All ships carried grain, with millions at stake. Four hundred more vessels face similar danger. no deaths reported yet.
A dispatch from Bérbera East Africa reports the Mad Mullah will halt attacks on the British if he is granted an open port and permission to import arms. This appears to contradict another dispatch stating the Mad Muttiah was involved in the matter.
The Marseilles message reports a serious street conflict in Marseilles as eight thousand dockers and sailors voted to continue the strike, reflecting escalating labor unrest in the port city.
Santa Barbara and vicinity felt strong earthquakes last night. In Los Angeles walls of many houses were cracked. The tremors were reported across the region with continued concerns about aftershocks and structural damage.
August Dumjahns body was found lying face down in front of his chair at 1209 North Broadway shortly after noon by relatives. Coroner Noel led the inquest with a verdict of death from unknown causes. Dumjahn, 65, had lived a solitary life since his wife died three years earlier and was a contracting carpenter by trade.
The Scott Van Buren Street sewer contract awarded to Monahan Brothers will be presented to the board of local improvements Monday morning for approval and signatures. Work will then begin immediately to complete the sewer, freeing the basement of the new government building. Other city projects include delays at the new public library and ongoing progress on the se station building amid winter conditions.
The Pacific cable work will be towed ashore tomorrow and laying operations will be recommenced in San Francisco on December 13.
