London reports claim Anglo German allies land troops in Laguayra and fighting erupts in the streets while Castro strengthens defenses near Caracas. Venezuela seizes ships, arrests British and German subjects, and Dewey joins fleet as Texas heads toward Culebra to join the action.
Washington December 11 John D Rockefeller has not stated a final sum for the national corporation for educational purposes but indicates he will give liberally. It is reported today that Rockefeller intends to contribute ten million dollars.
A Chicago Daily News ad offers 250 dollars for the return of jewelry stolen December 2 from 205 Richards Street Joliet. Police say nothing new yet but expect to identify the thieves and arrest the burglars in a few days.
Apt Charles Rest, superintendent of the course farm, was honored on the occasion of his sixty second birthday. Sheriff Joseph Ray and local Supervisors joined friends and relatives for a simple, unostentatious evening with supper, light refreshments, and social games. Guests included Carl Rost and Mr. Lyons of Chicago as part of the celebration.
The county farm superintendent, who just turned sixty two, celebrated with friends and humor from Sheriff Joe. A silk umbrella with gold handle was presented by A. W. Flexer on behalf of the group, plus a new pipe as an additional gift. Rost thanked donors warmly and spoke in fitting words.
Scranton report on the coal strike commission hearing with witnesses J C Crawford an independent operator and Henry Williams of Pardee company. Crawford kept his mine open and sold coal mainly to Delaware Lackawanna & Western with prices from 2.50 to 20 a ton during the strike. Williams testified he lost a fee in a mine accident and upon return his wages were used to cover his father’s debt.
Carnegie has returned from Europe and appears pale and frail, his health described as poor. The report notes he looks thinner and not like a well man, reflecting concern over his condition.
A Garero Somaliland dispatch says rumors persist that the Mad Mullah was killed by four spear thrusts while praying. Also notices a bricklayers and masons meeting at 7:30 this evening to settle the DwAe job trouble, signed by B Ward and Kent Haswell in Dwight, Illinois.
The funeral of Albert Stephen, who died Sunday morning, was held Monday from the family home to St. Patrick's church at 9 o'clock. Rev. Father Dunne officiated. Interment followed at Mt. Olivet cemetery. A large representation from the Tinners' union and St. Alois society attended, with pallbearers and flower carriers drawn from both groups.
At a Saturday meeting of the Will County Teachers Association held at Central school building a resolution was adopted urging the next legislature to pass a law for consolidating rural schools and to authorize local funding for pupil transportation. The county includes over 400 teachers who support this aim. Mrs. Austins Pancakes are advertised to aid appetite at grocers.
The Colorado Fuel and Iron settlement produced unanimous election of directors led by John C. Osgood as chairman. New officers and executive committee members were chosen including J. A. Kebler as president and J. H. McClement as second vice president, with proxies tallied for major factions.
Mrs Elizabeth Gougar, longtime local resident, died at her home south of Spencer yesterday morning after an illness of about a year. She was 79. Funeral set for Friday at Grace Episcopal in New Lenox, burial in New Lenox. Survived by husband who died last year, three sons Lewis, John of Denver, William of Austin, and daughter Mrs Jane Cunningham of Omaha, Neb., plus brothers Lewis, James, Joseph, William, and Daniel Gougar.

Berne reports M Deucher former head of the department of commerce industry and agriculture was elected president of the Swiss Federation. He assumes the post from December 11 and succeeds the prior president. The selection reflects a continuity of economic leadership in Swiss government.
An advertisement proclaims a "Mystic Cure" for rheumatism and neuralgia that supposedly cures in one to three days. It asserts the remedy removes the cause and cures the disease, with the first dose offering noticeable benefit. Priced 75 cents to $1.00, offered by J. D. Browne Co. and various druggists.
The Republican announces a Christmas best short story contest for township high school students with cash prizes of 5, 3, and 2 dollars. Submissions must be signed, delivered to The Republican office by the stated deadline with a photo if possible. Winning stories will be published in the Christmas issue along with notable locally written pieces and a steel worker piece by William Gett.
The Daughters of Liberty held a card party yesterday afternoon at Castle Hall. Ten tables played progressive euchre with three prizes awarded to Lilly Betky first Mrs. Grines second and Mrs. Knadge third. A dainty tea was served after the games.
