At Scranton hearing, James McMeigle testifies he was forced to strike after the mine boss confined him to dangerous work and later evicted him from home. BB D Gallagher says he was billed 25 cents for oil sold at 18 cent rate, with company store restrictions and penalties for buying elsewhere.
Italy will deploy a warship to Caracas to safeguard Italian interests as Germany and Italy exchange views on their claims in Venezuela. A London cabinet meeting discussed the Venezuelan situation while Washington reported the British and German diplomatic officials departed after delivering their ultimatum to Venezuela.
Wilkesbarre December 9 A blast from fifty six sticks of dynamite in No 3 colliery of the Lehigh and Wilkesbarre company at South Wilkesbarre this morning killed four men and badly injured nine. The dead are Matthew Phillips James McGlynn Arthur Jones and Robert Umbleby. The cause is not known but Phillips was believed to be carrying the dynamite box and stumbled dropping it.
The Joliet area reports no widespread coal shortage despite a cold snap. Supervisor Herath says only about fifteen families were briefly without coal and that aid is provided to prevent suffering while screening out imposters. Coal reserves were saved in summer to meet current needs.
The Gilbert-Guest entertainment at the Ottawa Street M E church drew a warm, intimate crowd. Miss Gilbert impressed as a refined violinist and reader, while Miss Guest's mezzo soprano voice moved the audience to sympathetic, extended applause.
