Pioneering Joliet Merchant Louis J Hammond Dies at 81

Louis J Hammond longtime Joliet resident and stock dealer died at his home 714 South Richards Street at 7 80 this morning aged 81. Survived by wife two children Ashley Hammond King and Werence Hammond Grinten one brother John Hammond. Born December 22 1826 in New York state he lived in Joliet since 1865 and co owned the Hammond block at Jefferson and Ottawa. Funeral Sunday at 2 30 pm from the residence with services and Oakwood burial.

Delinquent Boys Placed in Court Custody and Jail

John Farley a dependent 14 year old was given into the custody of Stephen Gruben a westside blacksmith in the County court. George Blaloch a youth in charge of Assistant Jailor Keeley was adjudged delinquent and ordered to Glenwood after weeks of theft and begging. Supervisor Herath brought the case to attention.

Watch Thief George Clay Held on Larceny Charge

Detectives arrested George Clay on suspicion of stealing six watches from Dellwood Park area. A gold ladies watch was found in his possession, with reports of two additional watches sold to a pawnbroker. Clay admitted earning the watches while gambling in the woods but could not name accomplices. A larceny warrant was sworn and the case set for August 24 to gather more evidence for the grand jury.

Peter Foley enlisted in the United States Army in Columbus in 1905 and served three years as a corporal before receiving an honorable discharge on Tuesday August 11, 1908. He returned this morning to meet his mother Mrs Rogens at 122 York Avenue and will be glad to greet friends.
