The school board ordered a sweeping inspection after discovering that secondary plans differed from the original specs used for the Central School building. Inspectors found cinder concrete floors and roof slabs that may be unsafe and proposed full live-load tests before occupancy.
Mrs. Sarah Faulkner of Sixth and Madison streets Lockport is in St Josephs hospital after a gunshot wound. Police weighed two theories with mixed views and a negro suspect described as the attacker sparked a manhunt while others doubted a self inflicted shot. The injury includes a punctured left lung and chest burns but recovery is possible with surgery.
The Republican city ticket has Frank W Wheeler in the First Ward James Smith in the Fourth Ward and Arthur Leach in the Seventh Ward with no candidates in the Second Third Fifth and Sixth Wards A convention at the Masonic Temple failed to fill all vacancies and the city central committee was unable to complete the ticket Only three nominees will appear on the 21st vote George Brown and J J Gaskill withdrew from the Fifth Ward and Dr William A McRoberts declined in the Sixth Ward The meeting proceeded with nominations filed with City Clerk Berscheid
Members of the Commercial club will receive election returns this evening via a Chicago Telephone Co private wire into the club rooms. Returns from Joliet precincts and outlying towns will be available. Luncheon will be served. Tomorrow evening a manufacturers merchants and jobbers meeting will discuss establishing a traffic bureau. Mr L D Knowles of Milwaukee will explain the system. The April banquet is set for Wednesday the 15th to discuss the water works question as it relates to fire.
Friday's program features Cotton Calvert and Tommy Mowatt in a key bout as part of a Joliet wrestling night at the theater. Johnnie Rooney appears in a preliminary, with Jimmie Bardell refereeing. Seat sales start tomorrow at the opera house.
The condition of W. W. Wood of Western Avenue was much improved this morning and he was able to sit up for the first time since he was stricken last Tuesday evening.
The F. W. Henley book store at 206 North Chicago Street has been sold to Frank H. Hall of Dayton Ohio, formerly a Joliet newspaper man. Hall plans to have his son Harry manage the store soon, while Mr Henley will remain in Joliet after seventeen years at the same location.
City Engineer H A Stevens and William H Zarley of Spring Creek Drainage District study options to protect Washington Street water mains during street excavation. The knotty decision follows a Drainage Board and mayor meeting to keep downtown supply intact.
Polls show heavy turnout with Ba voters casting ballots though weather not up to standard. Few women voted. no serious trouble reported by late hour. one arrest noted.
Voters faced a full day of polling as local drys and wets fought over the issue with M. W. Wi as secretary to the local league influencing turnout. Early reports show hundreds of votes cast and little trouble, though a few incidents and objections arose at precincts.
