Fire swept Barrett Block in Joliet causing extensive damage to storefronts and warehouses. Fire crews battled the blaze through the night with no immediate reports of serious injuries. Local officials limited access to the area as investigators began examining the scene.
Five people were insured by smoke or flames as a fire broke out just before noon threatening the entire business district. Firefighters fought bravely and conquered the blaze, with Joliet National Bank vaults left untouched. Estimated loss ranged from 125 000 to 160 000 dollars.

Barrett Block at Chicago and Clinton streets suffered a total loss of about 40000 with 30000 insured. Barrett Hardware Co estimated damage at 100000 near fully insured at 90000. Joliet National Bank fireproof vaults saved. valuables removed. White Cross, Bonded Employment Bureau, and doctors listed with smaller losses. Ducker's Corner and Clint E. Dice faced damage from heat water and smoke with insured windows and jewelry store losses. Police and deputies guarded against robbery amid intense flames.
A massive fire destroyed Barrett Hardware in Joliet, with losses estimated from $125000 to $160000. Firefighters battled the blaze from 11:50 a.m., wind driven, as downtown streets shut down and additional engines from Joliet, Aurora, and Chicago aided. The blaze spread rapidly, threatening nearby blocks, with several explosions and heroic efforts preventing total destruction.
A manhunt is under way for Mike Korico after he fatally shot Bozo Sercar in a Scott Street saloon during a wordy dispute over politics. Sercar lies gravely wounded in St Josephs Hospital as police pursue Korico through Servian boarding houses and railroad yards.
The Steel Works club closes spring terms on April 1 except the mechanical drawing class which continues to May and the art class which lasts into hot weather. Sketching trips will happen when weather allows and an April 23 reception will feature exhibitions and a short program by the Glee club and music pupils.
A fire in a closet at the rear dining room of the Duncan hotel caused a panic among guests shortly after midnight. Police Sergeant Arthur Scully extinguished the flames. The blaze’s cause is unknown.
L. D. Knowles, former rail traffic official, has canvassed Joliet to form a traffic bureau. The plan, praised at a Commercial club banquet, would have shippers pay by annual freight bills and ensure best routings and lowest rates with Knowles' guarantee of thorough investigation. A meeting for manufacturers, jobbers and merchants is planned to explain plans.
