A Lithuanian peddler Youdalle longs for a life as a merchant aided by his wife Chana. He seeks counsel from village elders and Yossel the Long One, opens a shop in Riga, and returns home to find no customers. A harsh truth from Yossel ends the dream, forcing him back to the road with his pack.
