On the anniversary of his martyrdom memorial services are held across the country, honoring William McKinley. Buffalo marks the day with ceremonies as people keep his memory alive in their hearts.
Special services churches compete in paying loving tribute with secret and patriotic societies conducting exercises in keeping with the occasion, marking a formal community remembrance of significance.
In Canton Ohio Judge William R. Day delivered the McKinley memorial day address at the First Methodist Church. He praised McKinley’s life from high school through wartime service and his remarkable public spirit, noting his kindness, cheerfulness, and dedication to duty. The day featured flowers, a portrait, and cross-church tributes across Catholic and Protestant congregations.
In Buffalo on September 4, pastors and congregations across churches honored the martyred president. Hymns such as Nearer My God to Thee and Lead Kindly Light were sung with reverent fervor. A crowded afternoon meeting at City Convention Hall drew hundreds, filling the hall despite limited seating.
In New York on September 14 1902 churches across the city held services for the first anniversary of President William McKinley's death. Rev Charles L Thompson preached at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church Mother church attended by McKinley as a visitor. Hymns Lead Kindly Light and Nearer My God to Thee featured in congregational singing. Governor Odell read the observance proclamation. Dr Francis Edward Marston recalled McKinley’s home life and character. Fifteen thousand people gathered at Central Park Mall for a memorial concert by a regimental band. Observances extended to Brooklyn suburban areas and across New Jersey.
McKinley memorial services were observed today in all churches of the Cincinnati area. Large congregations attended, reflecting widespread tribute to the late president. Further details continued on page 56, column 1.
Panama City dispatch reports Panama government and Colombia move to strengthen the isthmian defense. General Perdomo and troops to reinforce, Salazar orders resisting insurgents, Herrera consolidates at Bejuco and Chame, and tonnage dues are imposed on all foreign vessels. Cartagena cruiser waits at Barranquilla for troop movements from Honda.
Philadelphia dispatch reports the aux iliary cruiser Panther under Captain Wilson departed League Island Navy Yard at 6 15 tonight for Colon in response to Washington orders. A 320 man Marine battalion led by Lieut Col B R Russell sails aboard with commanders N J Shaw E S Williams D D Porter and Albert L Marix. The Panther carries four Colt rapid fire guns and other field pieces with full coal and ammunition.
In Des Moines Iowa representatives to the Sovereign Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows registered for the gathering starting tomorrow. Grand Sire Cable and party arrived as about ten thousand visitors are expected for the week long events plus church services and a deputy grand sire election. Governor Cummins to speak at a public welcome meeting.
SHENANDOAH Pa Sept 14 Tomorrow will begin the nineteenth week of the coal strike. Neither side shows signs of yielding and General Gobin says there is no prospect of early withdrawal of troops. In Wilkes Barre deputies prepare for potential trouble as mines resume and others may reopen with guard protection.
The afternoon program aimed to engage the public in organized labor. Thomas D. Nicholls of Scranton, president of United Mine Workers District No. 1, urged financial support for striking miners and explained their grievances. He said the strike would continue until a victory is achieved.
In New York on Sept 14 the First Union Presbyterian Church voted to demand coal operators and miners end the strike and seek arbitration for a peaceful settlement. Reverends Lorri mer, Lee, and Bently urged swift action and duty to the needy, with Bently endorsing a united national church and Roosevelt's potential role.
The Republican State committee bureau lists October speaker assignments with a busy schedule past Sept. 9. Names include Beveridge, Fairbanks, Hanly, Hunt, Gilbert, Storm, and many others for towns such as Brookville, Marion, Kokomo, New Castle, Terre Haute, Madison, and more, outlining dates and times for campaigning events. In Tamaqua Pennsylvania last night Deputy Hugh Black discharged a Winchester rifle by accident, killing nonunion worker Paul Haulick at Lehigh Coal and Navigation No 4 stockade. Coroner Fehler ruled accidental death after an inquest. A Hungarian man named John Kausha sought protection at Manila Park after a head and face injury.
Earl Caldwell a Chicago transplants machinist was killed in Omaha, Nebraska, amid Union Pacific strike violence. A second strikebreaker was beaten and left unconscious as six assailants fled. nine men were arrested on varying evidence. Police Chief Donahue said John Spellman admitted striking Caldwell.
Delegates from across the United States and Canada gather in Atlanta for the twelfth biennial convention of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America. Four hundred members expected. two weeks of sessions will consider headquarters relocation, general strikes, constitution amendments, and other union matters. Also in Florida, four hundred cigar-makers at Seldenberg factory go on strike over material quality, wrapper distribution, price-scale changes, and a permanent committee to compare cigars with the scale.
Horace Jackson, a Black man, found guilty of second degree murder for participation in the lynching of Aleck Herman in Lawrence County. Herman had murdered a woman who refused his marriage proposal and later confessed. A large crowd of Black residents surrounded the constable transporting him to jail.
In Trenton New Jersey on September 4 two union meetings were held by the combined locomotive unions led by a Mine District leader. About 50 delegates from New Jersey and Pennsylvania attended the morning secret session and the afternoon public meeting discussed closer relations among the unions.
Two interurban trolley cars in Springfield Ohio collided on the Dayton line, telescoping one another in a daylight crash. Injuries reported but details sparse as investigators examine the wreck and assess damage to the cars and line.
Morning fog hides the ahead car as two trains collide near field and Urbana. The rear car cannot be seen until too late at about thirty miles per hour. The front car conductor Southers sustained probable fatal injuries in the wreck.
Col William A Rafferty of the Fifth Cavalry died at San Felipe from injuries after a fall a week earlier General Chaffee was with him at death His body will be sent home on the transport Logan The US Lands Commission remitted land tax in Mantangas Luzon for 1902 The native constabulary killed eighteen and captured twenty five of the Rios bandits in Tayabas Luzon and suffered no losses Rios vowed he would never be captured alive.

In Butler Pennsylvania a mob attacked the jail last night aiming to lynch Jerry Bennett for assaulting a six year old girl. Sheriff Hoon receives praise for firm handling as police cordon the courthouse and jail while armed guards guard the interior. The Wagner girl’s condition improves and the town remains quiet with no expected trouble.
In Philadelphia on September 14 the National Prison Association held the annual convention with morning religious services at Holy Trinity Church where Rev Floyd Tompkins preached the sermon. Attendees visited Glen Mills House of Refuge for Boys in the afternoon and a public meeting at Grace Baptist Church was led by Judge Harry Davis of Philadelphia Common Pleas Court.
Salt Lake City September 14. The city Board of Education decrees that no married women shall be employed as teachers in public schools and those who marry will be asked to resign. Kent Newman says a married woman must devote time to home and husband.
In Chicago on September 4 a decision by the Women's Educational Association bars Black students from the women’s dormitories at Northwestern University after lengthy meetings. The pro color line faction prevailed decisively, enforcing segregation in the female housing.
