At Fort Wright Fisher's Island New York on September 2 Edward Roy was instantly killed by a premature discharge of a twelve inch gun. Harry A. Davis was seriously wounded and Samuel Clevinger severely injured as several others suffered minor injuries. All victims were privates of the Second Company Coast Artillery in the regular army. Roy was handling the powder and had loaded a thirty point charge but failed to lock the breech. The blast blew Roy to pieces.
