A large attentive crowd gathered at the Vermillion County opera house as Senator Fairbanks wrapped up his Southwestern Indiana swing. The event drew miners, farmers, and diverse vocations, each listener urged to vote with their own convictions and the ballot box power.
Clinton Indiana October 4 Senator Fairbanks wound up a campaign swing with a substantial address at the Clinton Opera House after visiting miners in Greene county. He urged voters to express themselves at the ballot box, stressing unity over party prejudice and the need for sound policies, while noting Democratic leadership has been faulty.
Special to the Indianapolis Journal. In Terre Haute on October 4 Senator Foraker spoke at the armory before a large audience. Former Representative Faria presided. He discussed industrial conditions, the coal strike, and tariff policy. He argued free trade would not end trusts, compared trusts to railroads, and praised expansion benefits from Spain’s war, Porto Rico, Cuba, the Philippines, and Pacific territorial prestige.
Boston October 4 Senator Henry Cabot Lodge addressed the Essex Club to back the Presidents actions on the coal strike and discuss tariff revision. He urged government supervision of trusts, warned trusts dangerous but useful, and endorsed public accountability and restraint to avoid further strikes.
Judge John C. Chaney Republican candidate for Congress closes his Monroe county canvass at the courthouse amid large crowds. He portrays rival Miers as a Democrat in voting history. Chaney plans to continue next week in Lawrence and Bedford if needed, while Porter county seeks a 90 vote majority and Crumpacker’s home county boosts congressional support.
A Burlington west-bound train and a Northern Pacific east-bound express collided head on between Columbus and Park City, Mont. Two men were killed and seven injured, one fatally. The dead were D. A. Campbell of Sheridan, Wyoming, and Andreas Lundwall of Bozeman, Montana. Injured include D. E. Bruce of Bristol, Tennessee, who is internally injured and may die, and his son Robert Bruce, with a broken leg.
North bound Erie Express rear ends a freight train near Milton Pa. Two crewmen, Engineer Wheeland of Harrisburg and Conductor St of Sunbury, are killed. A Harrisburg passenger, Shaffer, is hurt none of the passengers aboard are injured.
On Sunday at 10 o clock a White House conference will assemble led by the President with Cabinet members including Secretary Root Moody and Attorney General Knox and Commissioner of Labor Wright to address the anthracite labor dispute. The meeting will also feature various perspectives offered to Mr Roosevelt as the nation seeks a speedy solution.
A proposal to shield him from any undue tax on his strength for the next week or ten days. Only essential matters will be brought to his attention, to avoid risk of a setback. The aim is to allow focus on imperative considerations without distraction.

George E Brennen filed with the secretary of state nominating John Huston of Blandinsville as Democratic candidate for University of Illinois trustee to replace E S Maxwell who left Monmouth College for Harvard. People’s Party nominating papers for its state ticket were filed with 4 500 names. Secretary Moody plans Western speeches, first before Chicago Marquette Club, then Omaha and other cities.
Deputy Police Commissioner Nathaniel P Thurston tendered his resignation to Commissioner Partridge at police headquarters. He said he resigned to avoid embarrassing the police administration amid dissatisfaction in certain quarters and criticism directed at him.
San Juan report says the supervisor of elections asked the executive council to decide if Section 16 of the election law gives the party with the largest vote at the last election a majority of judges. The education commissioner, lone American, sided with Republicans. Federals are indigent and have cabled President Roosevelt.
In New York, nominations list E. K. Burnham as Democrat for the Thirty‑first district and B. Perensa?eae for the Twenty‑third, with Willi Foley of East Palestine as Democrat replacing T. ? district, and Sevenich, W. L. non, as Republican.
