President Roosevelt and advisers discuss the coal strike but devise no plan of action. The president reportedly invited coal presidents to a conference and will attend a Detroit meeting with delegations from major cities. Philadelphia Mayor Ashbridge declines, saying the strike will end before the set date.
President Roosevelt held a series of conferences with Cabinet members and Governor Crane to explore federal options to end the coal strike. Advisers concluded federal interference had no legal basis, while Governor Crane and Secretary Root joined talks as winter coal shortages loom. A new conference was set for tomorrow to assess possible actions and possible talks with mine operators and unions.
Detroit Mich Sept 2 telegraphic invitations from Mayor William C Maybury to state governors and city mayors invite delegations to a national coal strike conference. Most replies express hearty sympathy and promise delegates. Some officials question practical results while others offer support and desire metropolitan city representation.
In Middletown New York September 30 three masked horsemen halted a Pioneer stage between Warwick and Goshen two miles from Florida. They fired on driver Clinton Wisner and forced him to stop while robbing owners Clinton and Horatio Wisner and passengers including Mrs. Chamberlain Mrs. Webster Mrs. Fuller Mrs. Hart Mrs. Johnson. The robbers escaped as armed purses formed. Clinton Wisner, Warwick village president, described.
In Marion County a crowd gathered for the trial of seven African American suspects and Dr. Joseph C. Alexander for grave robbing. Judge Stubbs postponed hearings to Oct 23 to await grand jury findings. Bond for Alexander set at 3000 dollars and 2000 dollars for each defendant amid calls for justice and rising public alarm.
The reunion date for the Fifth Army Corps in Washington was moved from Oct 8 to the forenoon of Oct 7 by the programme committee. He then dismissed both the original and intervention bills, ruling Northern Securities Company should have been represented and that Power and the other party were not properly involved.
Colorado Springs reports a writ of certiorari moves the Stratton millions dispute from County Court to District Court. Executors fail to appear as Judge Orr orders a 2 pm continuance. Proposals for settlement arise via son Harry Stratton offering $1,000,000 to end the case, while administrators denounce alleged looting and conspiracy. The matter is transferred to the District Court as parties clash over control of the estate.

Theodore Smith and Thomas G Faircloth, white men, were executed for killing the elderly Lewis couple. Both showed nerve, had coffins inspected, and addressed the crowd before death. Faircloth was baptized in jail morning and both men professed religion. The Lewis children witnessed the scene and Smith left a young wife and baby behind.
Washington reports no bulletin today but officials say the President's condition is satisfactory after a comfortable night. He joined the coal conference at the temporary White House and had a busy day meeting speakers connected to the strike. Dr Lane said the case is progressing satisfactorily as the President remains cheerful and in good spirits.
The Empire State Democrats list Coler on their slate with a full ticket tentatively named by Hill. Indications point to five strong protest votes from Kings County amid the together move.
At the Democratic state convention in Saratoga N Y the fight over seating William S Devery and the Ninth Assembly district delegates dominated the night.
