Government denies moving the sewing department to Philadelphia. Immigration law defects blamed for diseased foreigners carried by steamship companies who are not permitted to enter the country yet infect others while awaiting deportation.
A committee of the National Board of Trade accuses the census of exaggerating farm acreage. It cites 11 counties with land listed as equal to or exceeding surveyed land, notes 19 percent of Ohio counties, 17 percent of Iowa, 12 percent of Kansas, and other states showing 100 percent or more. The report contends no state had survey land statistics, demands names and areas of surveyed lands, and argues excess acreage aligns with facts. Lexington Nov 23 The Broadway Christian Church votes 361 to 22 to install an organ for worship, ending Rev James W McGarvey’s thirty year stance against instrumental music. McGarvey transfers membership. factions split as others pledge to leave if organ installed.
Indianapolis cigar and tobacco dealers plan a defensive association to block aggressions by the United States Cigar Company. Led by T. W. Roth, the effort seeks unity among retailers with no extraneous aims, mirroring moves in Philadelphia and Detroit. Local leaders caution the trust will have a tough battle due to many factories and growing independent suppliers.
The struggle yielded no crew for the deed and only a colored janitor was near the scene though detectives made no capture. Last June John Stefert, a veteran worker, was found murdered in the engine room of the same factory. Both victims carried money and were robbed.

One man was killed and seven railroad workers injured when a locomotive boiler exploded at Thompson on the Monongahela division of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Trainsman John Markovisch of Duquesne died. Injured workers, all railroad employees, were not expected to die. The blast ripped the engine’s front extension as workers stood near the pilot.

Major Walter Reed, renowned army surgeon and bacteriologist, died in Washington at 70. His work in Cuba established yellow fever is spread by mosquitoes. Funeral will be held at St Thomas Episcopal Church. Reed, born 1851 in Virginia, studied at Virginia and Bellevue, served since 1875, and led key investigations into epidemic diseases including yellow fever. A telegram from Portal, North Dakota reports the probable murder of Stephen Hayes, a twelve year Bloomington lawyer who disappeared while prospecting. Hayes, once a resident of Ohio and Washington, D. C., was a man of means with a family in Bloomington.

Gypsy the elephant of Harris's Nickel Plate Show went berserk near Valdosta after a train wreck at Tifton. Keeper James O'Rourke was crushed when he entered the car to quiet the animal. Gypsy escaped, was hunted, and shot dead in the woods. O'Rourke's body was sent to New Orleans for burial.
Paris reports no progress for forty eight hours as witnesses to be examined Tuesday and a staged recreation of the murder scene will occur in the room where the tragedy happened with De Rydzewski present. Bertillon will photograph and diagram the room while prosecutors weigh homicide by imprudence charges and heirs may sue for damages.
