Reports from Mont Pelee La Soufriere and other volcanoes spark widespread fear as Fort de France and St. Pierre suffer renewed eruptions. Refugees seek shelter, rescuers brave danger, and evacuations begin as boulders and firestorms threaten the islands.
Secretary Moody says the Dixie relief ship reached Fort de France and will split stores between Martinique and St. Vincent. Captain Gallagher reports eruption damage centered on the north, with St. Pierre destroyed and tens of thousands likely dead. Supplies are enough for eight weeks. evacuation proceeds to St. Vincent as needed.

In Havana on May 21 crowds enjoyed electrified illuminations and a grand fireworks display. Foundations for a triumphant arch were laid on Independence Avenue as free theater performances and a public feast followed. W J Bryan and Senator Jones viewed Cuban prospects, urging fiscal restraint amid falling customs receipts and possible tax changes.

President Palma settles into the palace as festivities begin and receives many visitors. his inaugural message, expected next week, will stress faction harmony and close U S commercial ties while urging diversification of island industries. Knoxville news reports 226 dead in Fraterville coal mine disaster at Coal Creek with 141 bodies recovered. Thirteen bodies found in an entry included six letters noting a 2 30 PM time, revealing miners endured foul air and gas after the explosion. Letters directed families on burial and finances as relief efforts proceed with support from John Mitchell and the Mine Workers of America.
In Canton Ohio on May 21 a violent escape attempt at the Stark county workhouse left George Jacob dead Homer Stone and Charles Giganti fatally wounded. Ex guard Giganti seized a revolver and opened fire, prompting a brief gun battle with Stone as other prisoners attempted to flee. Guards and trustees contained the riot but not before the casualties occurred.
Mrs. W. G. Snoke wife of Corporal Snoke of the Ninth Artillery Band stationed at Fort Riley Kan died at her home from burns suffered in a joke gone wrong. He poured gasoline under a door and lit it to frighten her, the flames trapping her. she died hours later after insisting the act was a joke and exonerating her husband.
Nine hundred ballots cast with little change, as credential fights delay convention rolls. First strength test shows a seating contest between anti Steele delegates and supporters by a narrow 51 to 54 margin.
Special to the Indianapolis Journal from Wabash Indiana May 2 delegates to the Republican congressional convention for the Eleventh district sat through thirteen hours of balloting for four candidates George W Steele Cary E Cowgill Dr Charles Good and Frederick K Landis The latest tally shows no material changes with 900 ballots cast and each candidate retaining his initial strength as the convention rests briefly before more voting.
In Wabash Indiana the Eleventh district Republican convention entered an all night session after 4 pm as ballots showed no major shifts. Steele remained at fifty two votes, Cowgill and Good trailed, while Landis lagged. a dramatic incident with Francis briefly disrupted proceedings before Steele led the continued balloting into the night.
