An employee of the Coal Creek Company is entombed in a mine pit three miles from the outside opening at Fraterville. Rescue efforts are underway as officials report the disaster in the coal mine.
Disaster at Fraterville coal mine near Coal Creek Tennessee results in at least 175 deaths and many missing. A second report details a tornado that devastates Goliad Texas with 98 dead and 103 injured, widespread property loss, and urgent relief appeals.
Reports from Preston Minnesota describe a waterspout that flooded large areas and drowned four people. Alderman Gankey was struck by lightning and killed. Michael Walbright lost his barn and four children as a four-mile-wide disaster swept away homes and contents. Everton Garth died in Bloomedale. In Aberdeen South Dakota H Tobison lost all buildings and his four year old son perished. In Pittsburg Kansas a major windstorm damaged several houses after a southwestward surge with heavy rain.
Snow storms hit Evanston Wyoming with ten to fourteen inches of wet snow and heavy losses to sheep and lambs in Uintah county. Des Moines Iowa reports a cloud burst at Waterloo harming fifty homes on Dry Run, with rescues by boat but no fatalities. Kansas City Southern round house roof and industrial sites damaged in Pittsburg. Farm houses and barns in farming districts also damaged.
Nine English tourists including four women and four boat men drowned when a boat overturned during a squall on Killarney Lakes in County Kerry Ireland. A Glasgow train derailment followed with no deaths and some injuries. The disasters, early Whitsuntide holiday incidents, come as a storm sweeps the coast leaving travelers cautious and near by racing events as substitutes.
Senate panel led by Senator Fairbanks plans to raise the omnium public-building bill from about 17.4 million to near 20 million, with House gains for Indiana cities cited though not all may pass. Reports note arsenal amendments, postal cuts, and new routes, plus naval, life-saving, and revenue items through May 13 in Washington.
Crowds gathered in Regents Park today to watch a cart-horse parade that drew the usual lively turnout. Event provided entertainment for spectators and added bustle to the park afternoon.

Gasoline tank explosion at 8 Winnebago Street South Side leaves one dead and eight injured. The deceased is Adam Gripp, buried in rubble with no recovery. Injured include John Gagen sixteen, Witsenti Morosky twenty, Stant Shrevsi ten, Andrew Schilling six, George Karish twenty, Peter Orosky three, Annueller ten months. All victims suffered severe burns.
Several workers are in serious condition after an explosion at a gasoline tank owned by the United States Glass Company. The cause of the blast is not yet known, investigators said.
Daily Chronicle correspondent reports a thwarted plot against Emperor Francis Joseph as a bomb wrapped in paper was found in his night train compartment at Vienna. Investigators dismissed several railroad workers, and Vienna newspapers were restricted from reporting the matter with great secrecy maintained.
In New York on May 19 Justice James A. O Gorman of the Supreme Court was chosen grand sachem of Tam many Hall after a brief meeting. On the first ballot he received eight of twelve votes, with former Mayor Robert A. Van Wyck securing four. The result was made unanimous afterwards.
In Montreal on May 19 Colonel Gaynor and Captain Greene won a legal skirmish against extradition to the United States. A writ of habeas corpus took them to the Windsor Hotel prison as they await transfer by Governor Vallee to the Montreal jail. The extradition hearing before Judge Lafontaine continued as Donald Mackmaster and Chief Carpenter faced related writs and potential remand.
In dense fog this morning the Staten Island ferry Middletown hit the steam yacht Aileen on the starboard bow, killing passenger J. C. Atterbury of New Brighton, Staten Island. The yacht suffered minimal damage and continued. Separate fog collision involved the ferry Mauch Chunk and a railroad float near the Battery. no injuries reported.
Swift & Co Ar mour & Co the Schwarzschild & Sulzberger Company and the G KE Hammond Company moved their New York city office equipment to Jersey City today. It is said in Jersey City that the offices of Neilson Morris & Co and the Cudahy Packing Company will be moved to New Jersey.
General Wood plans a Monday Evacuation as US troops prepare to withdraw from Cuba. He will turnover to the new government 517,700 dollars in cash and 1,308,007 dollars in bonds, while the flag and symbols shift to Cuban emblems.
Havana on May 19 marked the final day of the American occupation as Governor General Wood and staff cleared desks and arranged evacuations. Dr. Carlos Findley was named chief health officer pending Palma’s ratification, lighthouses at Colorado reef and Jew and Governor’s keys were completed, and fiscal tallies showed insular expenditures and cash bonds. Palma’s cabinet held a meeting on a forthcoming message to Congress as British envoy Carden was named Havana minister.
Toledo Ohio May 1 Grand jury report partial indictments for bribery and official dereliction against Moses Bratley Edgar Eckert James Sheehan and other city officials and contractors after weeks of inquiry. Names listed include Bratley Eckert Sheehan Moore and Howard with counts of bribery and obtaining money under false pretenses.
