A violent confrontation between white officers and black residents in Pittsburg near Atlanta results in eight fatalities. Four white officers and four Black individuals die as a block of buildings is set ablaze. Five others are wounded. The riot involves police, military, and citizens in the deadly conflict.
May 17 Atlanta reports the Pittsburg suburb riot after lawmen tried to seize armed negro outlaws barricaded in a store. Eight killed including three policemen and four leading figures, 6 wounded. A small arsenal held Winchester rifles and a gatling gun amid flames and heavy gunfire. Governor Candler deployed 50 troops and ordered all militiamen on alert while 3,000 shots rang out.
Barker ordered troops not to fire on houses with women or children. A house without women or children was fired after a black gunman killed three white officers and wounded two. Two black men were killed. the ringleader stayed inside until the house burned. Three black suspects jailed. Police promise protection and firm action to restore order. Former officer Kerlin survived an ambush as five black assailants fled with help from a trolley car. Eight suspects arrested, warrants issued for arrest, as the city braces for further violence.
In Nebraska near Hyannis on the Burlington Billings line a head on crash between a eastbound passenger train and a westbound extra stock train destroyed a smoking car leaving five dead and many injured. Lincoln men among the workers escaped serious harm as wrecking crews ferried patients to Alliance.
In Williamsport on May 17 a Pennsylvania Railroad east bound flyer collided with a freight train one mile west of Jersey Shore. Engineer Lewis Shriner of the passenger train is dead and Conductor George Kinley of the freight train is badly injured. Passengers were uninjured.
Minneapolis May 17 grand jury returns indictments against Superintendent Fred A Ames Detective Norbeck Irving Gardner son of License Inspector Gardner and Detective James C Howard for bribery exortion and related crimes Norbeck faces seven indictments all tied to bribery connected to the gang Gardner charged as money collector from disorderly houses and women Chief Ames faces one indictment for taking a $25 bribe He is brother of Mayor A A Ames and long service in the Philippines including Manila chief of police duties He and others posted bail.
A German steamer Ehrenfels of the Hansa Line, Bremen, bound from Calcutta to Hamburg, was lost in the Indian Ocean around May 17 at latitude 12N longitude 56E. Part of the crew has reached Aden port, while the captain and most of the ship’s company are missing.
The French party led by Count and Countess de Rochambeau arrives in New York to attend Rochambeau statue ceremonies in Washington. The group includes M Guillem in, M Croiset, and sculptor Ferdinand Hamar and entourage. An informal dinner at Union League Club will honor the visitors before travels to Washington.

Secretary Wilson of the United Mine Workers returned from Hazleton, Pennsylvania, where anthracite miners voted to strike. He offered no new details on a potential bituminous strike, noting such action requires a national convention and possible district votes.
