An appalling calamity followed the eruption of Mont Pelee, as fire, stones, and mud destroyed St Pierre and nearby towns. The catastrophe leveled the city, leaving widespread destruction and heavy loss of life reported by observers.
Reports from St Thomas and San Juan describe Mont Pelee eruption wiping out St Pierre by fire, mud, and gas. More than forty thousand feared dead across Martinique. ships Grappler and Roraima among vanished vessels. Governor and staff among the absent. Refugees reach Pointe a Pitre while survivors recount chaotic, ash filled seas.
Dispatches from Pointe-a-Pierre Guadeloupe and Jamaica recount Mont Pelee eruption destroying St Pierre and surrounding districts. A State Department cablegram from Pointe-a-Pitre Guadeloupe dated May 9 reports a storm on May 7 near Sth inst, with casualties feared but not to exceed twenty persons escape with their lives. The note conveys early dispatches from the region to Washington.
Steam, mud and fire enveloped Martinique as up to twenty people escaped with their lives. Eighteen vessels burned or sunk, including four American ships and the steamship Roraima. Consul Thomas T. Prentiss and family are reported among the victims. A war vessel has been ordered to Guadaloupe for provisions and will depart at 5 p.m. tomorrow. The island’s population totals 185 000, with 25 000 in Saint Pierre, most of whom are believed dead. Relatives in Melrose fear for Prentiss and his two daughters May and Christine.
A letter dated April 2% describes peril on Mont Pelee and notes the schooner Anna E. J. Morse from Portland ready to take the Prentis family away if danger rises. Miss Frey believes the Prentis may have gone to Fort de France, awaiting a cablegram. May is her father's secretary, Christine is about fourteen, and James and Thomas Prentis live in Chicago and Batavia respectively.
Paris reports from Martinique say Mont Pelee eruption destroys Saint Pierre with a rain of fire and confirms the harbor is ruined. Survivors are few, with about thirty rescued by the cruiser Suchet. authorities fear Governor L Mouttel may have perished while the Suchet relays disaster details to Paris.
Special to the Indianapolis Journal Washington May 9 anti imperialists have a large fund to bring witnesses to Washington to testify about outrages by American soldiers in the Philippines. Wayne MacVeagh provided the largest addition, paid 4000 retainer before reporting it a waste of money. A small committee oversaw the fund to locate discharged soldiers who could testify before the Senate committee.
The Journal will issue on Thursday May 15 a complete description of the Soldiers' Monument in permanent form. It will be richly illustrated with views and include a history and a facsimile of James Whitcomb Riley's original manuscript for The Soldier. Also features Riley’s hymn The Messiah of the Nations.
Relatives of Paul Leicester Ford and Malcolm W. Ford gather in New York as Worthington Ford announces a single funeral service to be led by Bishop Burgess with Rev. Dr. Stiren. Bodies to be interred at Irvington on Hudson. Mrs. Paul Ford recovering from shock, while Mrs. Malcolm Ford visits her son at the late home.
Representative Cromer, aided by Senator Fairbanks, plans to secure an appropriation of 75000 dollars for the Anderson public building. The push follows optimism of quick congressional action as details unfold.
The Senate committee held a meeting today and gave the House bill latitude to advance the Anderson item. Representative Cromer remains confident he can secure a second building for the Eighth district.
In Dover Delaware May the Union Republican majority in the Legislature held a caucus at the Statehouse to reaffirm their right to name one of Delaware’s two US senators. The meeting, led by Speaker McComas, rejects cross support with Addicks allies and blocks a special session plan.
J H Wade donated 100000 to the Fresh Air Camp and a similar sum to Lake Side Hospital in Cleveland on May 9. He also gave 50000 to the Cleveland Day Nursery and 1000 to the Salvation Army Citadel, announced tonight.

Cabinet discusses general amnesty for Americans convicted in Cuba, with opposition to wholesale pardons including Neely. Senator Spooner joins late in a lengthy exchange on the Rathbone matter.
The United States Steel Corporation intends to spend about 61 million dollars on improvements to its holdings near Pittsburg. Instead of one large tube mill, three will be built, with most funds directed to Pittsburgh area works. The McKeesport National Tube Company site will remain active, and plans for further mills remain undecided possibly up to twenty.
Scranton reports a general miners strike set for Monday with a convention at Hazleton next Wednesday to decide permanence. President Mitchell announced operators refuse arbitration and urged local unions to vote and prepare to strike, while excluding firemen and engineers from the pause.
