The Rev. Levi Boyer of Washburn mission Ashtabula was suspended by Bishop Bedell and fled the city with his wife and child left behind. A seemingly platonic South meeting with Mrs. Lillie Stewart led to accusations of intimacy and possible marriage before Boyer’s new family. Mrs Stewart remains in Ashtabula asserting love for Boyer while he travels.
Chief Harrigan announces Maxwell arrested in Auckland and to be held until Missouri officer sails June 6. Extradition papers prepared. Gamble on alert to preserve custody. State Department and British minister notified to avoid release on technicalities.
General Grant slept until between 7 and 8 o'clock, waking briefly with minor discomfort. Doctors reported the tongue cancer lump not progressing fast, noting the General's system had grown stronger, with potential months of illness ahead. He did no dictation today but did write some, and his weight rose to 147 pounds, up one pound in a week.
Denver May 6. No major developments in the D and Rio Grande strike as new men rush to replace strikers and freight trains begin moving. Passenger service remains uninterrupted and the situation is otherwise unchanged.

From Svuaxim May 6 Gen Lord Wolseley is slightly indisposed. Osman Digna may be reforming an army but food scarcity limits threat. Tokar Arabs seek English protection against Osman with tribes ready to submit if England remains to shield them from his vengeance. A British Indian force under General Graham attacked Tackhol, routing 400 rebels, with sixty killed twelve captured and 150 cattle lost, then burned the village and returned to Suakim after Hasheen. British casualties were five wounded.
Vienna instructed its representative to oppose the selection of Mr. Keiley as United States minister to Austria amid rumors the objection stems from Mrs. Keiley being a Jewess. Washington reports no protest has been received and officials deny any religious bias. It notes Mrs. Keiley did not remain Jewish after marrying a Catholic.
The Worcester corporation presented Mr Lowell with a blue Morocco bound illuminated address expressing regret at his departure as United States minister to England and praising his literary aid to the Worcester library. The City of Rio Janeiro reports a March 28 collision between a Woo Sung Shanghai ferry and the Ocean Steamship Company's steamer Orestes on the Huantupa river. About 100 passengers and twelve crew on the ferry went down. Only 32 passengers and seven crew survived.
May 6 report states the Queen through Sir H. F. Ponsonby conveyed regret that due to a small-pox outbreak among Canadian voyageurs the decision was made that they should not travel to Windsor Castle to receive personal thanks for their Egypt service.

Lemberg May 6 Count Tolstoi the Russian Minister of the Interior has fallen into a profound state of melancholy and may die. Several celebrated medical experts will hold a consultation on his case.
Rome May 6 Rev Dr Donnelly asked the Pope to permit him to decline the succession to Cardinal McCabe in the archbishopric of Dublin.
Arthur Sullivan plans a June United States tour with a California leg. A revised Old Testament will be shown in London on the 19th Bee and published in New York on the 21st. Rumors persist of a Russia Germany Austria summit this year. France withholds Louise Michael pardon until universal amnesty for political prisoners. The Nile encroaches to Rosetta causing distress as cattle die from salt water and fresh water must be transported by rail.
A Ft Stanton special reports Martin Nelson killed Dr. Wiles, then Mabrey his wife, and two sons after waking to rob. A neighbor was slain, ten citizens guarded the house, Herman Beck fell to a rear shot, and Nelson escaped and was later killed.
Edward Wood of Eaulaire was instantly killed by a bolt during breakfast. His wife and infant seated opposite were uninjured. The strike caused only minor damage to bricks and dishes, with a small dark spot observed on the baby’s head.
The suit alleges a blow was planted on the cheek of young David M. Tovey by Professor Hjalmar Hjorth Boyesen of New York. The case unfolds with the claimant seeking redress over the incident cited in the complaint.
Columbia College stands as defendant in a $5,000 suit filed by Alfred E. J. Tovey on behalf of his seven year old son. The complaint alleges that in August on a Westhampton hotel piazza Professor Boyesen savagely struck the boy, causing deafness. The professor says the blow was gentle and a warning after the boy's bullying. Witnesses testified to a savage blow and the resulting deafness.
May 6 report describes frantic search for fire victims in Brooklyn. Heat hampered expeditions while thousands watched as bodies were recovered, including a boy of ten who died from injuries. Several missing persons listed, with at least eleven dead.
After a 30 mile forced march Colonel Otter’s force reached the reservation and drew battle with Poundmaker’s Indians. The clash lasted seven hours with heavy casualties on both sides. Indians reportedly suffered over 100 killed and 200 wounded while Otter’s force had seven killed and fifteen wounded.
In Lemont Illinois on May 6 the inquest reconvened as mourners filled the Polish Catholic Church for funeral services. Deputy sheriff Potter and Deputy-sheriff Nickerson testified the crowd was warned not to oppose troops and that the first shot may have come from the mob. Rev Dr McGovern preached a quiet, pro labor sermon urging calm and a return to work. no further disturbance is expected.
In Harrisburg on May 6 the House of Representatives debated a joint resolution to amend the constitution to ban intoxicating liquor. A motion to reconsider the liquor dealers compensation proviso failed, then the first section was defeated. Crawford moved to reconsider, which surprisingly passed 97 to 87 as supporters cheered. The vote was followed by adjournment pending further action.
Sacramento observes a holiday in honor of Mrs. Margaret E. Crocker for her public beneficence leading to the E. B. Crocker Art Gallery valued at $500000. A grand floral festival fills the Pavilion, and about two thousand school children take part in congratulatory exercises before the gallery’s formal presentation in the evening.

Washington May 6 The treasury count is nearly finished with all else found satisfactory. Three silver dollars slipped from a broken package in the silver vault have been recovered and the only discrepancy is two cents missing from a five cent pennies pack in the cash room. A heavy square red taped box hidden in a vault nook held a bottle of diamonds pearls attar of roses and a lump of gold. An older employee identified the items as gifts to President Monroe from the Japanese government circa 1823 stored in the Treasury awaiting act of Congress.
Special to the Indianapolis Journal reports a two week contest among Chicago Democrats for the U S marshalship of northern Illinois, currently held by Long Jones. The delay stems from Bill Morrison's influence as a senatorial fight in Springfield continues, drawing indignation from opponents who warn his meddling could cost Morrison votes.
