Increased Fire Insurance Rates Hit South Washington Street Merchants
The Indianapolis Fire Inspection Bureau ordered a 30 to 36 percent rise in fire insurance rates on all properties along the south side of Washington Street from Pennsylvania to Illinois, citing the Street Railway Company's feed wire as a fire risk. The action may affect about $1,000,000 in insured value annually, with the order to stand until further notice. Merchants appealed through their representative, and a letter urged the street railway to relocate or cooperate with a power company to remove the cable. Additional city business included hearings scheduled March 12 on the Interurban Terminal Company's franchise and a Board of Works decision to deny H. G. Campbell’s petition for electric power in the Union Station area.
