Rioters in Paterson New Jersey seized control of the city yesterday. They shattered Stik Mille with stones and bullets, terrifying workers who fled. Several people were wounded, at least two badly, with death feared. Police failed to suppress the mob and firemen were summoned by the mayor for help.
A mob led by Galleano and backed by anarchist networks seized Paterson factories. Police fought to contain the violence as mills at Belmont avenue and surrounding streets were wrecked or forced to close. Several officers and workers were injured, with shots fired and rioters battering windows as a general strike plot unfolds.
A gasoline generator exploded during a fire at the New York Hardware Co store in Guthrie Oklahoma Territory injuring about thirty people. Firemen fought flames as crowds gathered and flying glass wounded many including Archie McWathy who was fatally struck and numerous others with serious injuries.
E G Rathbone former posts director jailed in the Cuba post office frauds case sailing to New York aboard the Niagara after being freed under the June 9 general amnesty. Prominent Cubans and Spaniards accompanied him to the steamer. In Havana a Herald dispatch says U S consul general absence cripples commerce and boosts piracy and smuggling along the coast.
Six damages suits filed in the U S Circuit Court by Harry Alvan Hall for Austro Hungarian heirs of six men killed at the Eliza furnace of Jones Laughlins Limited. The cases seek about 120000 in losses from the December 19 1901 explosion that killed eleven and wounded many. Other foreign owned mills and workers may be affected as test cases precedent for further suits.
In San Francisco on June 18 the Gaelic brought Dr Yeang Wing a 74 year old Yale graduate who wore European dress. He passed the land inspector upon declaring and paying 15 on articles in his luggage and proceeded to shore unaware of any scrutiny. He is bound for New Haven with naturalization papers secure.
In Vincennes Indiana on June 18 a mob fears another attempt to seize Bill Edson the alleged rapist and hang him. Sheriff Summitt and police chiefs are ordered to act with full force while militia is readied. Bill Edson’s brother Samuel was arrested and fined 34 dollars after a struggle for a Colt revolver and dagger.
In Vincennes Indiana at 1 45 a m the sheriff reports strict orders from Governor Durbin on crowd control. About fifty men moved a steel beam from the new jail to the old building and were dispersed by deputies. Crowds linger and rumors of a 2 3 to 3 o'clock attack circulate.
Governor Durbin received a midnight call from D. J. Bonner, Vincennes police board president, seeking militia aid to guard Bill Edson, held for assault on a child. Bonner warned of street unrest and lax sheriff safeguards, but Durbin said the sheriff bears full responsibility and must perform his duty under state law.
The Governor urged Bonner to use all police and weapons to disperse a street crowd. He warned of removal from office if duties were not fulfilled and instructed Knox county sheriff to swear in armed deputies to protect the prisoner. The governor also ordered the Vincennes National Guard company to be ready under arms for any emergency.
Blackfoot Idaho June 18 a long line formed before the U S land office as Fort Hall reservation opened for settlement yesterday. Anger at Sooners who evaded Indian police to file claims grew bitter with camps in front of the office all night and threats of trouble. Contests over valuable claims rise as more filings occur.
General Malvar testified before the board in Manila that Tayabas remained disciplined under his control with towns obeying orders from both American authorities and insurgent leaders. He said he could muster thousands of riflemen and bolomen, noting supplies were sent to insurgents then reported as moved to Americans. He claimed the aim was to prolong the struggle, with attacks only when insurgents outnumbered or matched, and stated friendly natives would have prevented insurgent presence in towns. He implicated Bell’s campaign strategy in breaking the rebellion.
Four American teachers living at Cebu Island went out for a day’s outing on June 10 and have not returned. Three detachments of native constabulary search for them and were ordered not to return without the missing Americans. The other item notes Gen. F. D. Grant handing civil government duties on Samar to Luke E. Wright as acting civil Governor.
President McGowan announces that an Indianapolis company will furnish terminal facilities as part of a lengthy conference held in the city hall outlining the future interurban terminal project.
City officials and interurban road representatives met in the Board of Public Works office to discuss passenger and freight terminals. Mayor Bookwalter refused to entertain pick-up freight by Pennsylvania Company, reaffirming limits of the city charter and urging a unified terminal plan within a defined district. Hugh J. McGowan of the Indianapolis Street Railway Co announced interurban cooperation toward a single terminal solution as negotiations progress.
City officials and interurban interests clash over a proposed tax on cars entering the city. McGowen argues the tax burdens extending to fixed terminal charges are unfair and should be dropped if interurban firms assist with terminals. The mayor supports the loop plan on Washington Street and a fair outcome for all routes.
Paris June 18 Dr Garnault challenges Professor Koch by inoculating himself with cow tuberculosis to prove human contagion from cattle. He blistered his forearm and applied gland poultice prior to pig testing, expects results in weeks, and faces potential lung infection. His wife was kept unaware of the risky experiment.
Carey J. McAllister of 45 Crawford Street Newark was arrested at the White House after visiting the president and held for examination over alleged delusions. The 26 year old draughtsman carried a revolver saying he planned to shoot a mesmerist he believed ready to kill him. He had suffered a heat related illness last year and blamed patent troubles for his actions.
Kansas City dispatch reports Chicago and Alton local passenger train No. 4 derailed two miles west of Mexico Missouri about 2 PM. Engineer H Kellar of Slater was killed. Thirteen passengers suffered minor injuries but continued to their destinations. In Jefferson City the Supreme Court affirmed the St. Louis Circuit Court ruling awarding Florence Yocum’s representative the $8 accident insurance held by her father Henry Yocum. The 1898 voyage aboard the yacht Paul Jones from Keans New on the Gulf of Mexico ended in wreck with all aboard perishing.
A call issued by W. B. Wilson for a July 17 Indianapolis convention to decide on a possible nationwide work suspension. The issue hinges on whether delegates under contract districts can be swayed to strike, with about 435,000 miners potentially affected and districts 1,7,9,17 among pivotal voting blocs.
