Architects reply to Superintendent Power of the Park Board states no change to the Indianapolis federal building project. The north side cannot mirror the monumental south side but will still be attractive, resembling the garden front of a great palace.
The Indianapolis Park Board opposed the north or rear elevation of the new federal building. Archiects Rankin and Kellogg stated changes to face the rear would delay and raise costs. They argued the park-facing side will be attractive with trees and shrubbery concealing lower rear sections. The plan to turn the building around was deemed unworthy.
C H Noble, a former Indianapolis recruiting officer, is nominated as colonel in Infantry. The Army Senate promotion list includes other officers. Brigadier Generals Lincoln and Whiteside retire. House military affairs panel voted 7 to 3 against advancing the Brooke rank bill, citing opposition to retirements at high grades. Noble’s career spans Indiana service, Cuba and the Philippines, and he remains linked to Indianapolis activism and the Columbia Club.
In Minneapolis on June 10 Irwin A. Gardner was convicted of taking a $25 bribe as a special officer to shield shark gambling dens. The trial linked him to Mayor Ames’ administration and implicated Police Chief Ames who faces imminent trial. Prosecution argued a citywide protection system extended immunity to crime sites.
Still at liberty Tracey and Merrill, the convicts who killed three guards at the penitentiary, returned to Salem Oregon during the night and robbed J W Roberts of clothing before forcing him to shelter in his home. They then seized an expressman's overcoat and overalls and stole a team from Labranche, driving northward.
Harrisburg report details a bitter Republican state committee meeting over contested seats with Quay and Elkin rival factions shaking fingers and trading barbs. Pennypacker likely to be governor nominee with Brown and Watres in line for other posts as Penrose named temporary chairman.
In Little Rock Arkansas the Democratic state convention declared former Gov James P Clarke the party nominee for United States senator to succeed James K Jones after a 490 to 72 vote The endorsement followed the March 23 primary Clarke accepted the nomination Gov Jefferson Davis was renominated and Col FE W Rector of Hot Springs withdrew his name Davis announced his own bid to succeed Senator James H Berry whose term ends in 1905.
Chicago reports a tornado near Bloomington with all long distance wires and railroads down. The outage spans from Freeport to Clinton, with Indiana and Danville rumors of courthouse damage unverified. Telephones and wires are paralyzed across the affected area as the storm yields severe damage between 11 p.m. and midnight.
In St. Louis June W a Turkish bath attendant named Turk ish bath attendant pleaded guilty by agreement of counsel William Strothers to the murder of A Deane Covp er, the millionaire, and drew a sentence of five years in the Missouri state penitentiary with formal sentencing to follow.
New York June 10 coal road presidents released letters and telegrams to John Mitchell and UMW officials. Baer of Central Railroad of New Jersey declines joint conference and wage scale idea citing impracticability, discipline needs, and uneven conditions across fields. Truesdale of Lackawanna, and Thomas of Erie, criticize broad negotiations, urging direct employer employee talks amid rising unrest and reduced output.
The letter argues it is a crime to impede work and the company will not join cross-employer talks with miners. It urges handling grievances internally and notes executives T P Fowler R M Oliphant and Alfred Walter rejected a yearly wage review. Proposals include non-discrimination between members and nonmembers and preserving work quantity and quality.
A severe tornado swept through Clay and Becker counties in Minnesota and damaged towns in Iowa, killing fifteen and injuring many while destroying dwellings barns and other buildings. The path crossed Ulen Foss Atlanta Walworth and near the White Earth reservation with extensive property loss estimated around 100000.
News from Pretoria notes fraternization between Boer and British troops with a Balmoral surrender followed by a large sing song. British blockhouse troops offered coffee and tobacco to former foes. Boers praise Americans but deride Germans. A 1 percent net profit tax replaces the 5 percent levy from Volksraad. Commandant Fouche reports Boers have been good citizens and will be under British rule.
President Thorne of the North American Trust Company stated the firm is not involved in the bank case and has no knowledge of any company formed to buy bank stocks, responding to a Chicago report.
Two men die in a shooting affray near Falmouth Indiana on the Rush Fayette county line. Barber John Bailey and Oliver Cameron a wealthy retired farmer exchanged shots after Bailey sought his missing wife. Cameron defended his home and fired with a shotgun wounding Bailey who died minutes later. Cameron also died from Bailey’s earlier shot. The case sheds light on a long running dispute over Bailey’s wife.
