Sealed Verdict in Wade Counterfeit Case Heard at Velpin
A jury in a United States Court found in a case against William H Wade a preacher and farmer of Velpin South part of the state. The verdict was sealed under court orders to be opened next morning. Wade and his sister in law passed counterfeit nickels to a conductor last winter. The woman also passed spurious nickels Wade had given her. Wade claimed he did not know the coins were counterfeit and said he obtained them from a man named Jones. Wade’s brother in law is serving a workhouse term for passing counterfeit money. Wade conducted religious services at the jail on Sundays and his wife sought jail access but was refused. She then found a city job to stay near him. Mert McCain and William Dougherty of Van Buren were acquitted of making counterfeit nickels used for slot machines.
