Judge Hines Remembered for Firm Discipline and Quiet Humor
The obituary recalls Judge Hines as a small but unyielding figure who valued old English pleadings, led swift marches by placing shorter soldiers at the front, and could not be intimidated. He once threatened to report and handle offenses himself, rarely spoke of army or business life, but enjoyed tales of sending a man to the yardhouse. He married twice into the Fletcher family. his second wife Lucy survives, with one son, Fletcher S. Hines. He suffered a paralytic stroke in 1890, visited annually, and fell ill while preparing to depart to his Ludlow residence, dying after admission to Deaconess Hospital.

Union Station Ushers Demand Better Recognition Amid Complaints
Ushers hired at Union Station four months ago by Union Railway Company face discontent as the colored staff in gray uniforms claim the public ignores them. They receive salaries plus tips not formally required, but reports say patrons seldom acknowledge the tip. Yesterday afternoon a crowd of fifty or more prominent city residents arrived for a trip to Bust and were seated without call to assist, fueling grievances that the public discourages their baggage handling and travel assistance at all trains.
