Recital Sketches of Schumann Mendelssohn Liszt at McGowan Home
Miss Estella Neuhaus gave a second lecture recital on Schumann Mendelssohn Schubert Chopin and Liszt at Mrs. Hugh McGowan's yesterday afternoon. She offered a synthetical view noting Schumann's lack of technical facility yet poetic merit and described Chopin as melancholic rather than morbidly sentimental. She highlighted Schubert's brief but prolific output and Mendelssohn's refined method with an excerpt from A Midsummer Night's Dream. Liszt was praised as a rival virtuoso though some works show limited impulse for broader popular appeal. The program included St Francis and the Birds illustrating Liszt's descriptive style. Miss Geebam opened with delicate phrasing.
