A violent clash erupted between strikers and security at a merchant club leaving a man dead after being clubbed, two policemen shot with one likely fatally, and around forty rioters wounded including two seriously. The incident sparked emergency calls as authorities investigated the motive and possible arrests.
Eighth and Twelfth Regiments and the Governor's Guard to be on duty today as clashes between strikers and nonunion workers turn deadly. A deputy sheriff and a merchant were beaten, police fired on the mob, and about 1,000 shots were fired. Foreign strikers and wounded officers fill the scene as residents petition for troops amid escalating violence in Shenandoah and nearby Shamokin.
In Pennsylvania Governor Stone orders 1500 National Guard troops led by Gen. Gobin to Shenandoah to quell rioting. Wilkes Barre Pa July dispatch reports Miners President Mitchell declined to discuss the Shenandoah riot without full details. He said the situation is serious but no opinion could be given pending fuller particulars as he remains in touch with local leaders since Monday.
City, interurban representatives and shippers' committees held a secret conference as Mayor Bookwalter and Public Works Board discuss car tax, belt line plans, and a possible donation offer from George J. The ruling follows a Detroit precedent, as Chicago fights to keep gas priced at 75 cents per thousand feet while the company seeks a higher rate under its charter.
Firemen found night watchman David Watt dead and guard I P Miller dying in the Stoner wallpaper building in South Des Moines after a blaze destroyed $50,000 in property. It is believed the pair had liquor and fell asleep in the office before the fire spread.
In Louisville on July 0, D P Dye a former barber shot and fatally wounded his eleven year old son Carroll during a fit of temporary insanity from a severe pneumonia attack. Dye then shot himself in his home at 7:45 this morning after breakfast with his family. The boy died from a temple wound, and Dye was found dead at the scene. A physician later pronounced the boy's wounds fatal.
The panther called Tracy, which escaped from Bronx Park, has been captured in Bronxville by local farmers and returned to his cage. John Stears alerted others after spotting the animal near his barns. Two pursuers held their ground and nets were thrown over the panther before it was recaptured and taken back to the park.
United States gun boat Machias and Consul Livingston backed by Commander McCrea restored security as General Nord’s forces clashed with General Salnave’s troops near Cape Haitien. Nord’s army retreated in panic, volunteers deserted posts, and foreigners expressed relief at prompt action.
Twenty two sacks of cane chaff from Hilo aboard the bark Santiago will be shipped East for an experiment in paper manufacture. Hawaii burns or destroys thousands of tons of chaff annually, but researchers believe it can be utilized in papermaking.
Lansing July 30 A consolidation of many wholesale grocery houses in Michigan Indiana Illinois and Ohio was effected a corporation known as the National Grocery Company of New Jersey with capital stock 5500000 articles of incorporation filed today with the secretary of state.
Senator Platt asserts Theodore Roosevelt can command a solid Empire State delegation in 1904. A conference at Oyster Bay with the president and senator discussed politics. The party reports perfect harmony as Governor Odell is expected to be renominated.
Senator Thomas Do. Platt and Col. George W. Dunn met President Roosevelt at Sagamore Hill to discuss national and New York politics. Platt asserted strong harmony in the New York Republican party and predicted Roosevelt’s renomination and a solid state ticket, with Odell as a likely candidate for re election.
The Republican State convention named its 1912 slate led by Secretary of State W.B. Martin and Auditor B.F. Carroll. Gilbert 8. Gilbertson became Treasurer, C. W. Mullan Attorney General, Scott M. Ladd and Charles A. Bishop Judges, John C. Crockett Clerk, and W. W. Cornwall Supreme Court Reporter. Nearly 1,100 delegates attended. tariff and trust plank debates ended with a reiteration of last year’s line and a nod to Roosevelt’s inauguration.
