Bethlehem Steel tested its new gun shields at the proving grounds near Bethlehem in the presence of General Miles and War Department officers. Coppen Iowa Jan 17 late last night a horse and buggy stopped at Hart's livery barn with no driver. Inside lay the dead body of Miss Gertie Clifford from near Donnellson and Fred Brockman almost dead. Clifford shot through the head. Brockman arrested after regaining consciousness.
In Temple a man named Fred Brockman shot himself in the head and is unlikely to survive. A note in his coat explains his actions, addressed to Kind Friends Brother and Sister and signed Fred and Gertie. The letter says Brockman was in trouble and planned death by his own hand after telling the girl, who vowed to do as well. Gertie asks to be buried beside Fred. Miss Clifford, from a respected Donnellson family, is about twenty. Brockman, twenty, son of Hiram Brockman of Coffeen.
A cave-in at the Ada mine near Joplin Missouri trapped miners after a premature dynamite blast. John Simmons Arthur Roberts and Bruce Westfall died. Ora Ashcraft fatally injured and Mack Bradshaw slightly hurt. The Chicago syndicate led operation. Supt Gundling named. Hours passed before rescuers reached trapped workers. In Tennessee two more miners died at Millstone Cumberland Coal and Coke Company after Jewel car crash down a hill. Lon Newell and Floyd Thompson died. Walter Davis severely injured. seven more negro workers injured.
Olaf Halesrud of Lacrosse Wisconsin endured a brutal encounter with a pack of wolves as he tried to reach his home after being awakened by noises in the barn. The injuries left him with flesh torn in many places and doctors say he may not survive. A local effort to hunt the wolves will be organized amid rising destruction by the animals.
Butte Montana reports from Yellowstone National Park warn the buffalo herd is rapidly shrinking. Only eight animals remain in Hayden Valley of the former thirty, while elk and antelope numbers are higher. Liabilities are about 123000 with assets of 191000 in bills receivable and real estate. In Fulton Missouri the Commercial Bank of Fulton closed by state banking chief George B Carstarphen after cashier Philip Adams fled with about 4 in gold and currency. Depositors are expected to be paid in full.
Detroit January 17 Judge Swan United States District Court today sentenced Rev G F B Howard who pleaded guilty to using the mails to obtain money under false pretenses at Horton Michigan to two and a half years in the Detroit House of Correction. Howard, a nationally known figure, was arrested by a U S marshal at Columbus after leaving the Ohio Penitentiary following a nine year term and brought here. He made an eloquent plea for mercy but the judge held the sentence must be imposed.
A Pittsburg syndicate has secured 11 000 acres of coal land in the first power district for about 500 000 dollars. Eight mines will produce 12 000 tons daily, with 1000 houses for workers. The field lies five miles south of Pittsburg, from Fairhaven to near Library, crossed by major rail lines. The group plans immediate development of the field.

Admiral Bradford General Greely Captain Russell and Thomas F. Clark of Western Union attended. Clark described a Commercial Cable Company plan favoring exclusive agreements with Far East lines.
