Address in New York at the anniversary of the Railroad Branch of the M C A urges working people to save part of earnings during prosperity and stresses that success and happiness depend greatly on good managing thrift.
The twenty sixth anniversary of the Y M C A railroad branch in New York featured Andrew Carnegie as principal speaker with Ed ward V. Rossiter and Warburton presenting prospering reports. Carnegie urged keeping wealth for others, promoting competence and savings, and praised workers and their managing spouses. He forecast fast trains and warned on misallocated rail investments. In El Paso Carnegie offered $5,000 for a public library if the city would sustain it at $1 a year.
Jan 4 Port Townsend Waash reports Whidby Island residents hear of another headless body found on Fort Casey beach. Previous discovery showed a body with severed head and clothing removed. Investigators suspect multiple murders around the sound with decapitations to hide identity and bodies dumped into the water.
A man claimed to have found a body ten days prior but did not alert authorities before the body disappeared, leaving investigators unsure of what happened. The report notes uncertainty and ongoing inquiries into the missing remains and any potential links to a missing person case.
Mason Mich Jan 14 The trial of Edgar J Adams former speaker of the Michigan House of 18 charged with taking a bribe began today before Judge Howard Wiest in Ingham County Circuit Court. Allegations center on a West Publishing bribery scheme with $20000 in a St Paul bank and multiple checks. Land Commissioner French and Adams are named. Pratt convicted last Nov 2 and subpoenaed to attend. Testimony from Judge Shepherd and Henry M Cheever explored the resolution but produced no startling revelations.
The Court of Appeals affirmed a ten year sentence for William A. Miller of Brooklyn, head of the Franklin 20 per cent syndicate, reversing a prior order granting a new trial in the second department. Miller was convicted of larceny and remains imprisoned.

News from Manila reports Gen. Marisigan and allied insurgents in Batangas surrender unconditionally to Gen. Bell. In Taal 219 rifles and one cannon are turned over, with 3 colonels, 1 major, 5 captains and 12 lieutenants among the surrendering officers. Government personnel face overwork as more natives and arms are expected to surrender soon.
A man declared he would kill himself, prompting police intervention. He was captured several hours afterward without further incident.
A jury in Chicago rules that sending biblical quotes via postal cards to defame a person violates postal laws. O P Bullis of Orchard Illinois sued Rev. William Whitehead evangelist of Aurora Illinois. cards claimed Bullis was a hypocrite and that he disinherited his daughter. The court imposed fines and costs.

Representative Cromer pressed for expansion, directing carrier selection.
In Havana on January 14 the Estes G. Rathbone post fraud case continued with private letters between Rathbone and ex-Postmaster General Smith shown. Rathbone denied campaigns for a civil Governor post and recounted writing to the President and postmaster general to decline the position. A dramatic moment occurred when Rathbone faced Reeves over a claimed statement about Neely arranging the stamp burn. Reeves said Rathbone warned him God help you as he testified to the supposed remark.
In Chicago at the Rialto elevator a scaffold broke causing instant deaths for two iron workers Patrick Hanrahan and Mathew Martin. A third man Frank Hallanberg was seriously injured sliding down a rope after warning shout. The men worked inside a steel grain bin bolting up when the accident occurred near Eighty-eighth Street and Superior Avenue.
In Wichita Kansas on January 14 eleven year old Nellie Cornellson, daughter of George Cornetison, wounded three year old Laura in a stable with her father's razor. Laura died shortly after. No motive is found.
New York January 14 William H Ennis a Brooklyn policeman shot and killed his wife and fatally wounded her mother Mrs Gorman at Mrs Gormans home after forcing entry following a separation and arrest for alleged support failure He fled the scene and was arrested later the report says
In a United States Supreme Court decision on the Midway Company versus Frank Eaton known as the Section 3 case, three Duluth men Frank W. Gatton Leonidas Merritt and Richard H. Fagan and Milwaukee’s George J. Lontsters are made owners in fee simple of iron ore rich land valued between 6 000 000 and 3 000 000 dollars elevating them from poverty to millionaire status.
Robert Boulton a lumberman from this city and owner of a Wellsburg saw mill met a horrific death when his overcoat caught in a mill shaft. He was dragged around the rotating shaft and killed with one leg torn off. The incident occurred today in the Wellsburg mill.
George H Briggs of Langdon stands trial for the murder of Mrs Florence Jones in Newport New Hampshire. Two child witnesses describe Briggs firing at the woman inside the Jones home after an earlier cattle dispute. Annie and Cleve Jones testify Briggs threatened and shot at them as they hid in the cellar.
New York January report notes the Clearing House Association fined each bank one dollar for each missent check as banks handle over a hundred thousand checks daily. Exchanges occur at eight o'clock each morning with balances due by one o'clock. Rising business volumes have increased errors in throwing checks, forcing banks to recover payments on checks drawn elsewhere.
President Roosevelt hesitated to accept an invitation to the May 15 soldiers and sailors monument dedication in Indianapolis. He asked for two days to decide, citing Congress sessions and other duties. Indiana officials and Cabinet members may accompany him if he attends. the governor’s party met him in the White House.
