A train carrying workers to repair a suspension bridge near Brindisi collapsed the bridge. The train plunged into the Callearge river, causing multiple fatalities and injuries among the workers.
A Seoul dispatch reports Russia crossed the Zoomen River into Korea without seeking Korea's permission, extending its telegraph line into Korean territory from Seoul.
British troops surprised and captured a Boer laager twenty miles northwest of Ermelo on January 12. Forty two Boers were taken prisoner, including Major Wolmarans, in the operation amplifying Allied control in the region.
Fire in a two story building on Broadway in Buffalo killed Henry Pearlstein, his wife, and five children aged one and a half to twelve. Owner Joseph Supowski and brother in law Karl Bracki were arrested as investigators probed an accidental lamp drop and a subsequent explosion that shattered windows and collapsed the hallway stairs. The Pearlsteins and one child perished in the flames. others perished clustered with their parents.
In Marinette Wisconsin on January 12 Mrs Lena Christel aged seventy was found burned to death in her room. A policeman report indicates smoke seen from the room and a struggle evidenced by injuries on the body. Her son Martin Christel is jailed awaiting investigation.
A fire of unknown origin damaged the building housing the E. Co. W. Meier China and Glass Company in St. Louis today. The loss is estimated at 10000 dollars with 90000 dollars of stock insured.
Secretary Anthony Matre reports the American Federation of Catholic Societies will not print the new constitution in time for the Columbus meeting on January 2. Mme Lillian Nordica, the famed singer, was injured when a passenger train with her private car Brunnhilde attached collided on a sharp curve with a freight near Reeves station, Georgia. Nordica suffered a bruised shoulder and neck strain. accompanist E Romayne Simmons injured a hand. engineer Frank Traucey killed. several railway workers injured. trains and cars damaged. service resumed by night.

Mrs Ada Gilbert Dennis a fashionable modiste was assaulted December 5. She says she remembers nothing before the attack and does not know the assailant or motive. She slept when struck and kept doors locked. Revolver and money oddly placed. Police remain mystified. her condition improves and recovery seems likely.
Frank Holt, a thirteen year military prisoner at Alcatraz for desertion, escaped by concealing himself in a large wooden box sent to a San Francisco clothing firm and loaded onto the steamer McDowell. The box could be opened from inside the lid, and Holt likely emerged upon reaching the dock in San Francisco.
Special to the Indianapolis Journal reports Otto Wright shot El Passlinger near Metcalf after a dispute over a washing machine at a Wright farm. Passlinger and two others were badly injured in a separate incident at Center Ville where two safes were wrecked and little was secured. Wright surrendered to authorities following the shooting in Terre Haute Indiana.
A Valparaiso Indiana incident reports the Valparaiso accommodation on the Pennsylvania Railroad colliding with a freight train three miles east of Valparaiso between Wanatah and Chicago. Engineer Charles M. Gogan fireman George O. Wagner and J B Kelly, all residents of Valparaiso, were badly injured and taken to a hospital.
Frank Langdon age nineteen from Eureka Kansas married a fifteen year old girl six months ago and received ten dollars as a wedding gift from her mother. He brought her to Muncie and then departed for Kansas leaving her with strangers. He aimed to take Emil Rench along to collect money for transportation home. Rench the fourteen year old boy was stopped by police and will be returned home. The girl-wife, distressed, threatened self-harm. Rench is held at the police station on loitering charges.
Chicago January 12 The Great Western Glass Company incorporated at Springfield with 1,000,000 authorized capital aims to enter plate and window glass trades. Backed by Chicago and Western capitalists, the venture will build plants in Illinois and begin operations within four weeks independent of trusts or cooperatives.
Danville Indiana reports the streetcar company ran its first cars over a new glass works line a mile and a half northeast of the Soldiers' Home. The window glass works, described as the largest in the state, will begin glass production Wednesday night.
In Terre Haute Indiana on January 12 the Motormen and Conductors Union votes unanimously to reinstate Grant Tubba after his dismissal for alleged insolence. The meeting heard the committee’s report that Tubbs’s account of events was largely correct. The company had recently raised wages and pledged to retain top workers within the union. The text ends mid sentence with reference to newly elected officers described as radical.
