Prince Henry of Prussia arrives in Washington from New York at 9 am to attend McKinley memorials and visit Mount Vernon. He meets US ministers and dignitaries, receives a cordial greeting from crowds, and shares informal luncheon with senators and officials before touring Annapolis the next day.
Prince Henry of Prussia visited Mt. Vernon and placed two wreaths on George Washington’s tomb. He had his head bared for the ceremony and requested cameras be kept still. A special Washington, Arlington and Mt. Vernon Electric Railway train ferried him and his party to the site.
Prince Henry arrived in Alexandria at 2 30 pm and after a fifty five minute run from the capital walked to the tomb of Washington. He placed two wreaths in the tomb, planted a Unden tree fifty feet down the slope, and met Mt. Vernon Ladies Association delegates before returning to Washington amid cheering crowds. A mix up had some Alexandria residents cheering Lieutenant Commander Schmidt von Schwind, who amused the prince with a remark about preserving his reputation.

In Pittsburg, Allegheny river ice remained largely stationary at midnight, menacing Pittsburg and Allegheny with potential flood damage as the gorge grows and may back up water if it reaches the Fort Wayne Bridge. Reports from up river warn of alarming conditions as boathouses and craft are swept away and river traffic disrupted.
In Leavenworth Kansas on February 27 Judge Hook ordered ex Captain Peter C Demming released from Fort Leavenworth on a $2000 bond pending appeal to the Supreme Court. The decision centers on Demming being held after a court of regular officers tried and sentenced him. Also seeking release is ex Captain and Commissary James C Read en route to the federal prison for a three year term in the Philippines fraud case.
In Ironwood Michigan on February 27 three miners on the night shift narrowly escaped a catastrophic blast at the Iron Belt mine. After eating dinner they slept beside two powder-filled boxes that caught fire, triggering a partial explosion of forty pounds of dynamite. A ship tender nearby warned the men as flying debris caused injuries including a fractured shoulder and elbow, a dislocated hip, and the loss of an eye for another.
Chicago reports Captain Streeter, self styled president of the District of Lake Michigan Republic, indicted by the grand jury for murder in the death of John S. Kirk, a watchman for Henry N. Cooper, amid a clash two weeks earlier. Samuel Protine, Kirk’s companion, was exonerated.
A large gorge near Washington borough and Turkey Hill remains a threat, but a channel opened along the New York county side is considered wide enough to divert and carry off the flood water, reducing danger to the surrounding area.
Col umbus Georgia reports a bridge washed away as a cloudburst floods the Chattahoochee river. Rail service suffers with multiple washouts on the Seaboard Air Line and Southern lines. Water service disrupted in Phoenix City Girard area as pipes break. Affected areas include Montgomery Savannah Tampa and Key West with hurricane signals and strong winds. No loss of life reported.
Lincoln, Feb 27. A general rain fell across Nebraska with heavy pockets in places. Ice on the Platte and Loup rivers began to move, threatening trouble if a quick freeze does not follow. Ice breakups are forming dangerous gorges. bridge crews were warned to stay vigilant. The Missouri Pacific bridge at Plattsmouth was blocked by high water from a river dammed by ice.
On Long Island floods from rapid snowmelt cause at least one death. Philip Stein hauser, a Hicksville farmer, was found drowned in a water-filled hollow, his body tangled in fallen telephone wires after the swift melt.
A Texas wind storm raged overnight causing multiple houses to blow down and livestock losses. In Coke County Judge Graham’s home burned, killing his eighteen year old daughter. At a ranch near Abilene, occupants were seriously injured, with details unavailable.
A sweeping sandstorm hit southwest Texas today with impact reported across nearly every point. No material damage has been confirmed as of now.
Samuel P. Stoddard reports last year’s street sweeping estimate was 800 0 square feet higher than actual. The Board of Works will investigate possible overpayment to Charles H. Stuckmeyer, former contractor, amid findings that this year’s area will be larger while total feet swept is markedly less than last year. Stoddard kept findings confidential until Board notice.
The Board of Works is expected to award to George W. Seibert, president of Marion County Construction Company, a three year contract to sweep city streets at 16 cents per 10.08 square feet. The board consulted the city attorney about extending the term from one to three years and was advised it could proceed if deemed advisable. The lower rate compared with expectations and the contract terms are driving the three year preference.
The Council committee on contracts and franchises spent two hours examining the Marion County Heating Company contract with the Board of Works. Chair Negley led a line of questions to attorney Charles N. Thompson as council members pressed for details. No action was taken and another committee meeting will be held soon. The discussion covered several features of the document.
A special Florodora Theatrical Company train from Norfolk to Wilmington wrecked at Eastville Virginia in heavy fog. W L Carleton paralyzed may not recover. E C Herr and Charles Powers severely injured. Eight women among the injured. firemen and crew escape with varying injuries. Sixty to eighty seven aboard. The crash destroyed scenery and baggage. uninjured crew fought the fire.
William A Rinard a Braddock steel worker killed Margaret Lambert Wilbert at 85 Watson street Pittsburg then shot himself. The motive was a months long infatuation with the Wilbert woman whom Rinard had pursued after her separation from A P Wilbert. Police and families had tried to separate the pair, but Rinard ultimately opened fire in the parlor, killing the woman and himself within minutes.
Patrick OConnell died and Jeremiah Murphy lay in critical condition after gas from a boiling oil still at the Standard Oil works in Constable Hook New Jersey overwhelmed six men. Five others escaped serious harm as rescuers arrived. OConnell was dead on scene and Murphy was unconscious.
Washington observes a national memorial for President McKinley with President Roosevelt Cabinet Supreme Court justices and foreign dignitaries in attendance. Secretary of State Hay delivers the oration as Prince Henry of Prussia sits among the diplomatic corps while Marine Band plays and formal processions proceed in the Hall of Representatives.
