Wabash freight wreck injures no one in Logansport collapse
In Logansport Indiana on February 23 the second section of Wabash fast freight No. 90 derailed and splintered eight cars on the Berkley Street bridge over the Wabash River. A freight car of flour was hurled through the bridge into the river. Authorities said the crash occurred when the train split on a hill and the rear section hit the forward portion as the engineer slowed for the crossing. The Detroit passenger train rumor proved unfounded and no injuries were reported though delays lasted hours. At Valparaiso Chicago couple Charles Fernekes Jr and his wife were killed by a fast Lake Shore train while waiting at the depot for a Chicago bound train. They stepped into the path of the limited and their bodies were mangled. Fernekes was a lodge keeper. his father is a prominent retired merchant in the city.
