Private cars outnumber railroads in use say rail experts
J W McCall of Baltimore told the Imperial that private cars in America exceed 100000, costing about 10 million dollars annually in mileage. Such private lines drain railway income, yet no single line can refuse to haul them. Southern Pacific briefly tried to drop private fruit cars but reversed course. Large fruit, grain, and provision companies own extensive lines that rival small railroads.
