Fourteen people suffocated and several injured as a blaze at the Lincoln House hotel during a crowded stock show visit. A boiler explosion and dense smoke trapped guests. fire escapes failed and the only stairway was blocked by flames.
The Lincoln Hotel on Madison Street burned at 6 o clock trapping many guests. Thirteen victims suffocated in beds. one died in an ambulance. Fire Chief Musham blamed the design and lack of rear stair, saying many could not escape. Dozens more injured or terrified as crowds fled via ropes and ladders while firefighters fought dense smoke.
Reports from Washington describe Thomas B. Reed, ill since Tuesday, in critical condition at midnight with temperature 100.2, pulse 88, respiration 33. Doctors Gardner Goodnow and Macdonald, joined by expert consultant Dr. Goodnow from Philadelphia, observed improving appendicitis symptoms but worsening araemic features. Kidney complications raised uraemia concerns, with no operation expected. by 1 am the condition remained unchanged and quiet.
The Sanitary Conference of American Republics, in Washington since Tuesday, ended with Santiago de Chile chosen for the next meeting on March 15, 194. Resolutions urged mapping mosquito distribution for future conventions and emphasized the insect as a disease vector. A broad preamble linked plague and other diseases to waste, urging separate handling and destruction of garbage on premises. Typhoid fever and Asiatic cholera risks were tied to contaminated food or drink and emphasized disinfection of all discharges to stop the menace.
At the Anthracite Strike Commission session in Scranton witnesses from Hazleton describe harsh hours and low pay for firemen and crews. Father Hussie testifies of frugal but poor miners and widespread poverty, noting few own homes and many families split between mines and mills as inspectors may be called to testify.
The Age Herald reports President Roosevelt has designated Joseph O. Thompson C. H. Scott and William F. Aldrich as referees to recommend men for Alabama office vacancies. New York December 4. Harry Ruit a locomotive works employee in Paterson New Jersey died after a practical joke by five fellow workers using a 110 pound per square inch air pump. Ruit’s abdomen swelled and he died after hours of suffering. The men were arraigned in Paterson on manslaughter charges. The dead man’s father attacked one defendant in court and was restrained by officers.
Indianapolis officials report ongoing negotiations with railroad representatives to reduce grade crossing dangers. Mayor Bookwalter seeks practical, economical safety solutions rather than insisting on track elevation, and a meeting with railroads is expected soon to form a working basis.
Secretary Hunt of the Commercial Club and William Fortune, chair of the club’s elevated track commission, met the mayor for two hours to discuss a grade crossing improvement. Officials say the mayor is well prepared and likely to include elevated track supporters in forthcoming talks. Railmen credit his approach with speeding a settlement over the two years delayed by prior administration politics.

The figure reflects latest information received at San Josef, Guatemala, before the Sidney sailed, with Guatemalans noting information remains hard to obtain. The list is smaller than earlier reports.
