Army units stationed in the New River mining district to protect life and property during the coal strike. Guards and unionists are under fire as miners take action. one man killed yesterday and others shot at by concealed attackers in the hills.
Reports from Bluefield West Virginia and Thurmond detail clashes at Crane Creek and New River coal fields. One striker, John Ruble, was killed near the Sigamore Coal and Coke Company. guards fired back as mobs pressed the works. State troops arrived, militia deployed at Rush Run as skirmishes continue, with widespread operator resistance to striker demands and mounting property destruction.
Governor White dispatched the Second regiment from Parkersburg, Huntington, Milton, Charleston and Ronceverte to Thurmond after Fayette county sheriff pleaded he could not control the miners strike. Troops will protect life and property not end the strike. serious danger of outbreak cited as guards face hostile actions.
In Tamaqua Pa the first clash between striking miners and troops occurred. Five prisoners sit in the guardhouse at the Twelfth Regiment camp and Captain Gearhart is wounded by a striker’s stone. Troops moved through Panther Creek Valley to No 4 colliery as strikers gathered. A mob attacked trolley cars at Summit Hill, rocks flew, and soldiers fixed bayonets after an Italian, Jim my Marteen, resisted. Rails were greased and sand was laid to proceed.
In Keokuk Iowa a policeman found the infant of Vina Kellar in the south part of the city while serving a subpoena. The mother had concealed the eleven month old child as a vagrant and had taken it to a sister's home. Authorities advised not to use habeas corpus to seize the baby.
In San Francisco on August 28 heirs of the late Charles L Fair reach a preliminary agreement to settle the estate. The will will be filed for probate and executors named. Minor heirs and full value of the estate, estimated at 300000 dollars, will be protected. The Nelsons relinquish all claims via quit claim for ten dollars in gold, transferring rights in property across ninety nine city county parcels and additional holdings in San Mateo Napa Yolo and Calaveras counties. Public Administrator Farham seeks administration opposed by the heirs.
From Havre dispatches the Daily Express reports Charles M. Schwab, president of United States Steel, appears worn and tired aboard the La Lorraine after sailing from New York. He says he seeks rest, denies resigning or negotiating a Europe deal, and plans health resort stays with a month at Aix Les Bains before any further business actions.
In Chicago the Western Union Telegraph Company announces it will replace all boy messengers with girls in city and residence districts. Men will handle night work and daytime city delivery, with changes to be implemented immediately.
Newport soldiers prepare for a massive mock battle with a navy fleet led by Admiral Higginson. The plan includes a midnight start, new signal code, and private movement rules as battleships, cruisers, and tugs coal and position off Martha's Vineyard and New Bedford for a week of simulated combat.

The Cincinnati Hamilton and Dayton Railroad Company plans to purchase the right of way for a forty mile extension to Ironton once the Springfield extension of the Indianapolis Decatur and Western Railroad is in good order. The Clover Leaf already operates to Ironton via lease, and CH&D must construct its own line.

The Colored Man of Gibson County escapes immediate execution when Gov Durbin halts the plan to hang Lewis Russell at Michigan City Prison. Russell shot Perry Stout in a drunken quarrel near Princeton, pleading self defense. The governor orders a thorough review, delaying the sentence by thirty days while he studies the case and evidence. Russell’s white wife remained supportive, and Russell would have been the prison's first Black man hanged under Warden Reid.
Warden Reed relays to Russell by phone and later telegram that Governor Durbin has granted a thirty day respite. Russell, scheduled for execution in the hospital death chamber, expresses gratitude while noting his still final sentence. The governor's action does not alter the death sentence.
In Chicago on August 28 Mrs John McCurdy a bride of under three months killed herself by gas after undressing and placing her mouth on a chandelier gun. She tied heavy cords around her neck and turned on the gas. Husband found her body. letters imply mental distress. She was thirty eight.
Union Pacific general attorney John N Baldwin says ten Indianapolis men who accused false imprisonment by Burt were part of a labor agency group and not deprived of liberty. He describes their arrival August 14 and plans for Denver transport as misled, with most not workers and some repaying agents.
The North Carolina Republican state convention in Greensboro endorses Thomas H. Hill of Halifax for chief justice of the Supreme Court and leaves associate justice positions blank. The body votes to accept disfranchisement amendments and to avoid contesting their constitutionality, with the convention composed entirely of white men.
In Sandwich Massachusetts during Old Home Week a town dinner featured Joseph Jefferson and former President Grover Cleveland as speakers. Cleveland urged pride in the place of origin as key to Americanism, stressing the need to sustain community sentiment amid industrial haste and wealth pursuit.
