A gunman in Terre Haute is shot and killed after seriously wounding a policeman with a razor. The assailant is clubbed and shot by several officers during the shooting affray. In Marion a police chief shoots and wounds a citizen amid the chaos. At Pittsburg a compromise affects Flint glass workers, expanding labor terms.
INDIANAPOLIS JOURNAL reports from Terre Haute and Marion on Aug 21 describe Clinton Pierce dying after a street confrontation with police and Policeman Sanford Pierce wounded by razor slashes. Firearm intervention ended the melee as Pierce collapsed from gunfire while Attle Pierce’s condition improves. In Marion Superintendent Lindsey Addington fatally injures Bert Middleton during a separate confrontation. Middleton, eighteen, survives after a wound to the cheek.
In Lafayette Indiana on August 21 State Labor Commissioner Frank Schmidt failed to mediate between the street railway company led by Vice President Murdock and the Street Railway Men's Union. The union insisted on reinstatement of nine men who left last Sunday and eleven previously discharged workers, refusing the plan without arbitration. A new mediation effort by Commissioner McCormack from Bedford is planned, but no immediate meeting is expected. Also reported is a legal case involving Stella Teller, cousin of Senator Henry Teller, who fled a private insane asylum and was traced to Valparaiso after escaping from Jacksonville Illinois.
In Martinsville Indiana a woman seeks treatment for mistreatment and claims clairvoyant powers to locate wells and plans a trip to Egypt via John Rockefeller. Separately, farmer William Flake absconded after forging six notes to Morgan County creditors, including Frank Paul and Eli Thomas Jr. with various sums, while a related note is contested as forged by his brother Davis Flake.
In Kokomo Indiana Aug 21 two women Mrs Jacob Osler and Miss Blanche Morgan and an aunt of the deceased were thrown when a horse pulling a hearse fleeing the depot after the body of John Windigler was loaded for shipment to Versailles Ohio. The incident occurred as the hearse was leaving the depot.
Senator Charles W. Fairbanks spoke to about 4000 old settlers from Tippecanoe Fountain and Montgomery at Meharry’s Grove in Lafayette Ind. It was the thirty third annual reunion with 1500 dining and the crowd applauded as he praised farming progress and recalled early district life. The event included speeches by John Harrison of Ladoga and concluded with a business meeting naming the next reunion for August 183.
In Denver on August 21 the Gates legal team said an injunction dissolving pending restraint on stockholders meeting may be sought after five days notice. Judge Mullins plans a mountain vacation, Gates party heads east, no new developments reported at Colorado Fuel and Iron headquarters.
A Centerville telegram reports a jail mutiny in which Sheriff Davis was seriously wounded. His wife grabbed an ax and, aided by Deputy Bevington with a revolver, forced prisoners back to cells. The incident follows several jail-break attempts in the past week, two of which succeeded.
A man named Perkins posing as an angel of Christ was flogged, had his hair cut, and told to leave Texarkana Arkansas after a whitecap mob drove him out. A notice on his door warned that podobal sympathizers would meet the same fate.
The Honorable W Bourke asserts he never connected with the anti merger suit. Reported fear that Peter Power would reveal secrets prompted his flight. Sponsors Weidenfeld Cockran Stern and others allegedly urged him to flee the country.
In New York on Aug 21 attorney George A. Lamb testified about Power and others involved in a Northern Pacific merger suit. He named W Bourke Cochran Camille Weidenfeld and Thomas & Post as key sponsors and outlined a plan to move Power to Europe to shield the case. Power testified he received stock in payment for his name and believed he represented influential backers. Cochran denied all involvement declaring the testimony false.
Report states Edward P Remington doubts his brother Robert R Remington died by his own hand. Autopsy found a mouth bullet. officials say gun and revolver tied to suicide. Newport police and medical examiner back suicide theory. family and others decline further comment.
Cincinnati reports a hitch in forming a 39 million candy combine. Edwin Corbin, O H Peckham, and Vincent Price push trust plans, but several Cincinnati firms refuse to join. Reinhart & Newton and P Ebhert Company initially agreed then balked, halting progress.
Major George A. Armes, a retired officer, was shot at his Washington area home by former tenant J Deland Johnson. He was wounded in the right breast but not seriously injured and received treatment at a city hospital after the incident. Johnson, who had prior trouble with Armes, allegedly fired two shots as Armes sat on his porch. the second shot went astray.
New York reports General Franz Sigel died in his New York home at age. A German revolutionist who became a Union commander, Sigel earned fame for skillful retreats saving his troops at Carthage Pea Ridge and Newmarket. He led at Pea Ridge and earned major general. His career included teaching roles and German American leadership in St. Louis before the Civil War.
Gen Franz Sigel, born November 24, 1824 in Sinsheim Baden, trained as an officer, led Baden and Palatinate forces in the 1848 revolutions, joined the exile path through France, Switzerland and England, and arrived in New York in May 1852. He later worked as engineer, surveyor, and teacher before settling in the United States.
Sagamore Hill guests including J J Hanrahan and F W Arnold presented President Roosevelt with an invitation to the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen convention in Chattanooga. The president showed willingness to attend if possible and discussed a separate court of claims appointment with Senator Pritchard.
In Havre Montana on August 21 a shooting affray between white and colored troops at Fort Assiniboine left Private Fraylor of the Twenty fourth Infantry fatally wounded and Private Pong white of the Thirteenth Cavalry gravely hurt. Fraylor fired into the air during a dispute and Pong fired three shots striking Fraylor. Both men remained in serious condition.
William Haffer, a Trempeleau County farmer near Winona, died after eating fifty roasted ears of green corn. He ate twenty four at lunch, fifteen at dinner, and eleven more overnight, then died in the morning beside his wife. Local reports note an unusual poisoning by corn consumption.
Springfield Aug 21 Dr J A Egan secretary of the State Board of Health sent a circular to county superintendents detailing a new policy for protecting sight and hearing in school children After Chicago tests showed one third had defective eyesight the board requires annual eye examinations in every Illinois school.
