Nonunionist chased and stoned in Shenandoah as soldiers stood nearby. The mob action spotlighted unrest in the coal region with authorities attempting to quell violence and protect bystanders. Local residents reported the disturbance spurred by labor tensions and community fear.
A large crowd gathered and a regiment of troops was sent to the scene. Serious trouble was probably averted by the coolness of the militia which dispersed the mob.
In Shenandoah Pennsylvania a mob of fifty to sixty pursued an unfair workman near the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron washery. Watchman Anthony Flinn was tossed into a creek. troops formed and reinforced, arresting John Howe Frederick Zimmerman and Matthew Bronz in connection with the assault. The men were held in $500 bail after a late hearing.
In Wilkes Barre Pa deputies arrested for inciting a riot and felonious wounding after yesterday’s riot at Warnke washery. Two shot men not seriously hurt. prisoners released on $10,000 bail for Monday hearing. Washery owners vow to restart. Sheriff fears further trouble and may call troops. Quay and Penrose urged to press arbitration. Public Alliance to Atlantic City to meet Quay. A Lithuanian striker arrested in South township for involvement in the shooting of George Sullivan.
New York reports affidavits from thirty two men and boys claiming they were abducted by a railroad detective in a locked car. They say they were ferried to Pittston Pennsylvania to work in coal mine washeries, with two men escaping back to the city.
Indications point to a settlement of the anthracite coal strike on or before September 1. Major John Biddle, engineer commissioner District of Columbia, is authority for this.

The National Society of the Army of the Philippines elected officers for the coming year. Irving Hale of Denver is president general, with Donald McRae Council Bluffs as first vice president and Al' ed S. Frost Evanston as second. Charles King Milwaukee seats third vice president, J. W. Pope Colorado fourth, Wilder Metcalf Lawrence Kansas fifth, H. A. Crow Connellsville sixth, J. M. Shutte St. Paul secretary, C. B. Lewis Colorado treasurer, Rev. Charles Malley Nebraska chaplain. St Paul will host next year’s meeting, with the executive committee authorized to set the date for early September if advisable.
An afternoon storm in Louisville Kentucky caused a 30 minute blackout as ominous clouds rolled in. Winds reached 58 mph, nearly an inch of rain fell in 15 minutes, and the temperature plummeted 20 degrees. Lightning damaged telephones and blew out windows, with streetcars halted and floods at several intersections. No fatalities reported.
In Arkansas on August 15, extreme heat swept the state. Near Van Buren five Iron Mountain Railroad laborers were overcome, three died and Alma reported one heat death. Only one prostration was logged in Little Rock. The day’s high reached a record percentage of degrees.
In Mexico City Aug 15 the Mexican Sugar Planters Exchange is formed by leading planters to counter suspected Spanish efforts to monopolize sugar. About 1200 estates exist with 17 large properties, and next season output is estimated over 106000 tons. The group aims to boost business and develop cultivation while ending coercive experimental stalling.
Mayor Bookwalter signed the ordinance paving the way for interurban road work with a 10 000 dollar sum. George F McCulloch of Union Traction Co said the bond issue would be recapitalized and the line between Tipton and Indianapolis could begin within months with work extending to Anderson and other connections, signaling progress for the city and its traffic plan.

Neafie and Levy Shipbuilding reports the Chauncey reached 29.51 knots in a trial, with four runs averaging 28.64 knots and a one hour endurance of 26.90 knots, just above the required speed. the destroyer will soon be handed to the government.
William H. Dillard, a colored messenger at the San Francisco custom house, was captured in Vancouver, B C. He is accused of issuing forty two fraudulent registration certificates to Chinese nationals, allegedly earning thousands of dollars. A Treasury inspector’s request for a duplicate certificate led to a forged reply and Dillard’s subsequent disappearance. Indicted in July, he may waive reverie and return to San Francisco for trial.
A tidal wave devastated the lower part of Altata near Culiacan on the Pacific coast. At least thirty people drowned with numbers feared higher and heavy property losses reported. Rumors say nearby towns were also washed away and missing residents may be numerous. Relief from Culiacan and swift state and federal aid are expected.

Chairman Elliott of the Marion county Republican committee has secured second floor rooms in the Lemeke building and plans to move in next week. The committee will need six to eight rooms to accommodate members this year.
Representative E. D. Crumpacker of the Tenth district spoke at the Hotel English last night and will be among the speakers at Bethany Park today.
Capt Oberlin M. Carter pleads with Americans to suspend judgment until a regular trial. In a letter to chief counsel Judge H. G. Stone he denies any theft from the government and asserts he will prove his innocence. He laments unjust imprisonment and vows to fight as Dreyfus did amid strong public opinion.
In Houston on August 15 eleven white men were jailed after a fight with African American workers at the Southern Pacific creosote plant seven miles from the city. Casualties included Neilson Randall killed, Bil Anderson and an unnamed negro wounded, William Hamilton fatally wounded, and others shot in the leg. The confrontation began when Randall, armed with a Winchester, approached the works as whites building oil tanks nearby had warned the workers to stop.
A hearing revealed that James J. Hill’s opponents gained leverage as Peter Power Boudens was briefly supplied with Great Northern stock. Four hundred shares were issued by RE. R. Thomas to position him as a figurehead within the dispute.
In New York a hearing before Special Examiner Mabie in Peter Power vs Northern Pacific directors focused on shares and stock transfers tied to the Northern Securities merger. Clerks and brokers including Milton F Boyden and E R Thomas testified about stock ownership, gifts, and alleged perjury as witnesses described for the record.
