Seven thousand strikers from Scranton and nearby towns heard National President John Mitchell and District leaders urge unity and support for the coal strike. Mitchell defended the cause, called for law and order, and warned wage reductions if the strike fails.
President John Mitchell replied to the Citizens Alliance of Wilkesbarre, accusing it of inconsistency while noting ongoing violations by the coal combination. Police were kept in reserve at headquarters and twenty patrolmen stationed near Oxford colliery as it resumed operations amid a mass meeting and potential disorder.
Rome reports Vatican plans for about 450 friars from Augustinian Dominican Franciscan and Recolleto orders in Manila to depart in stages. Aim is to finish the friar question without further talks as Taft negotiation efforts proceed. Osservatore Romano cites an interview with Bishop O Gorman.

Spokane dispatch reports Harry Tracy the fugitive desperado is in eastern Washington unwounded and armed with four guns and 200 rounds. He crossed the Columbia River at 5 am and heads toward the Idaho line aiming to rob a bank or express car. He promises $000 within a year to escape helpers and plans to reach Hole-in-the-Wall country in Wyoming where he believes he will be safe among thieves.

Manila reports a constabulary raid exposing a large Katipunan network in Tabayas province. After attacking the headquarters six prisoners were taken, one man killed, and a confession with documents confirmed the organization’s extent. Cavite actions dispersed bands Felizardo and Montallon. Captain Bamagon killed. Paragua governor William A. Phillips named. Mayon volcano ascent completed in twenty hours, second ever.
Warren Johnson and Joseph Burgess, prominent Salinas youths, were fatally wounded early today by a woman who attempted suicide after the shooting. Johnson was shot twice in the abdomen and Burgess in the back with a bullet piercing the right lung. The incident followed a quarrel and the woman was arrested.
Eleven Brass Molders Local 83 members led a scheme paying rewards for assaults on nonunion workers. Grand jury indicts Gustave Hopp and ten others after testimony detailing pay scales up to 25 dollars for disabling attacks. The alleged “wrecking gang” and “flying squadron” operated during Western Electric and Stromberg Carlson strikes.

At Wise Courthouse in Richmond Virginia on August 1 George Robinson a colored man was hanged for the murder of another Black man in front of about 1000 spectators. The rope broke on the first drop and Robinson was brought up for a second attempt after the sheriff sourced a new rope. He remained conscious throughout and showed no sign of collapse.
In Hattiesburg Mississippi on August 1 a young black man was hanged in the courthouse yard for assaulting a white woman Mrs Jar Gardner. The prisoner Mizler confessed to the crime on June 56.
After a long conference, city officials and interurban leaders reached a full agreement on contracts and taxes. Hugh J. McGowan and associates secure a franchise for the Indianapolis Terminal and Traction Co, with belt line and extensions planned, while interurban cars will pay a staged tax over 31 years. The deal, endorsed by Mayor Bookwalter, awaits council ratification and signing today.
