AmidNoto clashes in Brussels on April 13 police and gendarmes dispersed a rioting crowd near the Maison du Peuple. Five demonstrators wounded, one fatally, sixteen arrests. Authorities mobilized 2500 Civic Guard to restore order and closed the building.
Police used strike cartridges and rifles as rioters clashed in Brussels, wounding and killing several. The unrest centered around the Maison du Peuple area with gendarmes forced to fire after missiles and revolver fire from alleys and streets. News notes the violence affected the poorer quarter and that precise casualty counts remain unclear.
Pierre reports three rioters died in hospital with another mortally injured and about thirty more badly hurt. A doctor lost his nose in the melee as gendarmes charged rioters from front and rear. One killed was assistant secretary of the Socialist Jewelers' Union. King Leopold’s Ostend trip passed uneventfully and Queen Marie Henriette remains seriously ill.

President Roosevelt secretly selected Eugene F. Ware of Topeka Kansas as pension commissioner after meeting him during a Kansas City stop. Roosevelt invited Ware to Washington, pressed him to serve after urging sacrifice for public service, and Ware accepted after a Supreme Court appearance.
The US Army transport Hancock, previously reported aground near Iba in northern Luzon, arrived in Manila without damage after striking a coral reef and requiring lightering. She remained stranded on the reef for sixty hours before being floated.
Kansas City April 4 The Journal reports that Major William Warner US district attorney has been instructed by the attorney general to dissolve the so called beef trust and to convene a federal grand jury next Monday. The move follows rising meat prices and signals a major federal investigation.
In Pittsburg on April 12 a 2000-ton railroad bridge over the Allegheny River was shifted about thirty feet to temporary piers for a new double deck structure. The move occurred in under two hours with no traffic disruption or mishap, demonstrating remarkable precision and planning.
Marks City April 12 reports a violent clash between officers and desperadoes near Braggs. Four men are killed and seven wounded including a noted outlaw. Communications are down, so details are unavailable tonight.
In Cleveland on April 12 Mrs. Martha J Calhoun aged 75 and her daughter Mrs Vaughan aged 46 were shot to death near Mantua station forty miles away. Stepson Will Vaughan is jailed in Ravenna on suspicion with bloodstains on his trousers claimed to be from a cut finger. The revolver's sixth bullet ended Mrs Vaughan's life.
In Chicago on April 1, rites of the ancient Jewish faith were revived as families paid sums from 10 cents to 1 dollar for certain corner stone ceremonies for a new home for aged orthodox Jews at Ogden and Albany avenues. Samuel Schwartz of Waukegan contributed 1,000 dollars for the privilege of laying the cornerstone. The candle lighting ceremony followed with bids ranging from 3 to 15 dollars for lighting the first and subsequent candles.
Be lighted and 75 dollars paid for the privilege. After this there were the rites of passing the sacred wine and breaking the bread, with other ceremonies sold to the highest bidders, yielding a large portion of the holding’s cost from these rites.
Atlanta April 13 The Constitution says plans are in place to form a vast trust of all southern cotton yarn mills. A five member committee will report in favor at a Charlotte meeting on April 2. F L Underwood of New York proposes to issue 40 million dollars of capital stock under New Jersey laws.
The House Military Affairs Committee plans to push three bills restoring military rights to soldiers despite a presidential veto. Efforts aim to persuade the full House these cases deserve merit and should not be treated as desertion, but securing a two thirds majority appears unlikely with details uncertain.
A street car moving across the Maryland Illinois junction at 4 45 yesterday afternoon swung off tracks and struck a carriage carrying Charles Fearnaught his wife and six year old son Carl The horse was killed and the carriage wrecked Mrs Fearnaught and Carl were treated for cuts while Charles Fearnaught lay unconscious later reported as seriously injured with skull fractures doctors warning his condition could worsen Traffic was halted for about two hours as crews cleared the scene and towed the disabled car and carriage away The motorman and conductor declined comment pending company reports

Dora Bartlett, keeper of a disorderly house in Terre Haute, shot and fatally wounded Joseph Mahalek after he and a companion failed to buy beer. Mahalek, a 26 year old candy maker, pocketed a 15 cent beer glass and was shot in the groin. Bartlett is jailed as Mahalek’s death shocks the town.
The Globe Steel Hange and Steve Works pattern and mounting rooms at Kokomo Ind burned from an overheated stove. Loss is set at 15000 with 2000 insured by each of fourteen companies. The plant will be rebuilt and all patterns were destroyed. Separately at Valparaiso Ind a banker’s residence suffered near total fire damage caused by a child playing with matches.
Crowds filled Marion Indiana churches as the North Indiana Methodist Episcopal Conference drew visitors from along the Union Traction lines. Bishops Joyce preached at the First Methodist Church while all churches were supplied by the conference and crowded for both sessions.
