A two block blaze along the Atlantic City boardwalk destroys twelve hotels and many smaller buildings. Loss is estimated over 750000 with insurance rates deemed prohibitive. Militia guard looters as Philadelphia and Camden engines help, while guests save belongings and several dozen people are slightly burned.
The Dunlop Hotel and Break House on Tennessee Avenue and the beach suffered near ruin as a blaze raged. Firefighters sprayed water on brick structures to halt spread while guests sought other accommodations. Most guests found rooms at the Marlborough or other local lodgings. Mayor Story was away in Trenton seeking Governor Murphy’s charter signing, which was delayed but eventually occurred. A federal report shows 919 national banking associations added by March 31, 1902, with total capital of 50.3 million and bond deposits for circulation of 13.24 million.
