Homewood prepares its biggest Fourth of July with a full day of events. The American Legion band of about forty musicians leads the parade at 1 p.m. from 183rd Street, with a postparade concert and a baseball game between Homewood A C and Calumet City. Prizes, races for all ages, and ice cream for under tens fill a schedule that aims for wide community participation and festivity.
The Lutherans commemorate 400 years with a concluding exposition at Hotel Sherman June 29 30 after a world wide display at River Forest College June 19 29. Exhibits span Mission Fields South America Europe China India and more with 7000 square feet of booths and addresses by global leaders.
Homewood and Hazel Crest pupils attend the 31st annual commencement at Wakefield Community Hall. The program features violin solos and multiple piano trios including performances by Kathleen, Frank and Fannie Cowing. Betty Searle. Ruth Worth. Lois McBain. Peggy McCullough. and ensembles led by Professor Bandeorb.
The Chicago Evening American hosted its newsboys from city and nearby areas at White City on Monday. Attendees from Homewood included Sidney Steiner and his crew Harry Pearson Geoge Wisnoski Lawrence Morrison and George and Joe Deak who reported a wonderful time enjoying all the rides and thrills.
The Homewood Presbyterian church Sunday school held a well attended picnic at Thornton Forest Preserve last Saturday afternoon. Older boys and men enjoyed horseshoe and baseball while Mrs. C. C. Collier read stories to younger children. Girls and boys joined races as ladies unpacked baskets for a bountiful supper and Blaine Dugan announced the cars would depart at sundown.
Readers respond to last week’s Homewood News with praise for the change of management and policy. An Illinois Central official commends the paper for its engaging coverage and the community’s interest in Homewood’s welfare.

Homewood business men held a preliminary meeting at the Village Hall invited by Joseph Schwarz. Temporary officers were elected and dues discussed as Calumet City aims to join the South Suburban League replacing Chicago Heights, with formal league acceptance planned at the next meeting. The Calumet City team played Lansing last Sunday and faces Riverdale at home next Sunday.
The Homewood branch of the Columbia School of Music held its final program and recital for the term at Miss Virginia Davis's home in Flossmoor on Sunday afternoon June 23. Local performers included Billy Soupham and many other Homewood students, with additional participants from Flossmoor and Harvey.
The annual American Legion and Auxiliary picnic will be held Saturday June 29 at Wicker Park. Meet at Central School Highland and Ridge at 3 p.m. Cars will be provided and attendees should bring cups spoons and forks with Mrs O Connell in charge of arrangements.
Homewood lodge Modern Woodmen of America will hold its annual picnic next Sunday at Noble Oaks Park Cedar Lake Ind. Cars depart for Funk's Hall at 9 o'clock with ample transportation provided for those without cars.
The Homewood Fres byterian church hosts a men's club supper next Friday evening featuring motion pictures and radio music. Reservations are urged through Art Johnson of Johnson Electric with a 50 cent dinner charge, service at 6 45 pm, and the Refreshment committee led by Mr Johnson.
The Odd Fellows and Rebekahs of Homewood held a village picnic with families. Fifteen autos left for Shu bert's Grove for a day of baseball races prizes and refreshments. Organizers were Fred Samol witz and Bob Whitney.
Mrs. Carl A. Powley spotted smoke from a sun dried pile of grass in her Ashland avenue yard. Firefighters arrived quickly but the blaze near the garage subsided on its own, and Powley finished extinguishing the remaining hay fire.
The Second Annual Greater Harvey Exposition opens Monday at the Buda Club house. Old residents of Harvey before 1893 receive tickets and a Booth in the building hosts local merchants exhibits and five vaudeville acts nightly. Rides including a merry go round ferris wheel and chair plane operate outside. The expo closes next Saturday night.
