A mystery blaze destroyed the Ascher department store on Halstead Street in Chicago Heights early Monday, with damages near 100000 dollars. Firefighters from Chicago Heights and neighboring towns battled the flames aided by rain, saving the adjacent Thomas hotel as winds drove the blaze into a furnace. The building, 20 years old, was reduced to four standing walls with stock ruined, origin of the fire undetermined.
