Fire at I M Yost flour mill in Hays destroyed the structure after a blaze started in the dust room on the top story. Firemen saved the bank and lumber yard as well as the elevator and engine room. Loss is placed around 520000 with 27000 bushels of flour and 900 bushels of wheat destroyed. insured for 520,000, chances of rebuilding noted. Mill crew and broad staff disrupted, with workers promised future employment.

Kert Smith Held on Elopement Charge in Lansing

Henry Ringe Dies After Illness of Typhoid Fever
Henry Ringe died Sunday at 10 20 am after about two weeks with typhoid. His young son is ill but expected to recover. He lived on the Otto Reemsnyder place six miles north of Hays. Funeral held 3 pm Tuesday at the Lutheran church with Rev. Wiest. Ringe born January 23 1864 in Warlin Germany. Married Wilhelmina Abe October 28 1887. Came to America in 1890 with Anna and his brother William. Lived in Donnellson Iowa ten years, then Plainville, then to Hays in 1900 remaining there. Joined Donnellson Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1892. not transferred to Hays church. Died September 15 1907 aged 47 years 7 months 22 days. Member of Odd Fellows. Free Press extends sympathy.

Old Settlers Fox and Dreiling Pass Away in Ellis County
Two longtime Ellis county residents died within a week in Walker. Jason Fox born May 9 1831 in north Georgetown Ohio married to Sarah Jane Moore in 1849 moved to Kansas 1872 and Ellis county in 1880 dying Sept 15 1907. He left eleven children and had been a merchant in Walker. Anthony Dreiling known as Father Dreiling died at his Walker home after German descent and as Ellis County’s early settler reaching age eighty three. He sponsored many German settlers and farmed through hard years.

The fire burned flour and feed for four days while Ellis switch engine arrived late. Two plate glass windows in J F Jordan’s furniture store cracked badly. James Finley and Frank King suffocated by smoke. Finley was ill for two days. Train No 2 eastbound held due to blocked track and broken telegraph. Water commissioner praised for effort. vast water use failed to lower tank depth. Telegraph post burn destroyed wires. temporary station set by seven am. Commercial service delayed. no messages over lines all day. Local business moved near depot. post office fixtures removed and mail sacked in case fire spread. Women collected gasoline at pumping station amid alarm.
