Russians Help Build Pfeifer Community in Ellis County

The Pfeifer settlement, founded by 1870s Russian immigrants from Ukraine, grew into a thriving Catholic town with a stone church, monastery, and school. Residents petitioned for the Golden Belt railroad, supported Red Cross and Liberty Loans, and honored fallen American soldier Joe Brett with a large, patriotic burial in Pfeifer.
