Disagreement in Kansas over Supreme Court library filter ruling

Kansas librarians criticized the Monday Supreme Court decision upholding the Children's Internet Protection Act while Attorney General Phill Kline called it a breath of fresh air. The ruling requires public libraries to install Internet filters or lose federal funding, affecting about $2.3 million in aid to Kansas libraries. Duane Johnson, Kansas State Librarian, said the decision disappoints those seeking unfiltered access, though the state will comply and urge local libraries to do the same. Critics warn it impinges on free speech. proponents see the measure as a step to curb online pornography accessible to children. Kline plans to push legislation next year to require filters in Kansas schools and libraries.
