Hays Medical Center marks ten years of family health center

The HMC Center for Health Improvement celebrates a decade of nurse practitioner led care begun June 18 1993 at the Hadley Campus. Carla Lee and Mary Hassett helped develop the proposal now serving thousands while providing nursing student experience. A 3 to 5 pm open house on Wednesday at 2500 Canterbury Suite 102 will mark the anniversary with Lee and Hassett attending from Wichita.

Healthcare centers in Ellis County open at varied hours

The Family Health Care Centers in Ellis County operate with extended hours for acute illness and minor injuries and provide physicals for employment transportation and school. The Hays center at Hays Medical Center 2220 Canterbury near the ER runs 5 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. Ellis center at 1204 Washington stays open to 5 p.m. Monday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. Soldier killed by sniper in Iraq near Khaldiyah

A U S soldier from the 1st Armored Division was fatally wounded by a sniper in Baghdad while riding in a Humvee. The attack followed raids in a Sunni area as U S forces detained hundreds in three days of Baghdad and northern Iraq sweeps. Eight other incidents left casualties and heightened tensions amid the Iraqi conflict.

Kansas school staffs shrink as districts cut 500 jobs

Kansas districts reduced full time certified staff from 36,334 to 35,822 between 2000-01 and 2002-03, a 1.4 percent drop double the 0.7 percent decline in enrollment. State budget cuts, new requirements and inflation outpace funding while districts add prekindergarten, all-day kindergarten and vocational teachers.

Boundaries Expanded for Hays Urban Area

The Ellis County Commission approved changes to Hays urban area boundaries to secure federal highway funding. Hays City expanded boundaries to 45th Street north, Commerce Parkway east, Reservation Road south, and 220th Avenue west, eight miles from Vine Street. County roads overlapping the area will be relinquished to enable reclassification for federal aid.
