Dignitaries touched shovels as construction begins at the New Goodland Energy Center in Kansas. Michigan investors led by former Michigan House Speaker Rick Johnson bought the ethanol plant, targeting 40 million gallons annually with test runs in late October and full operation by year end. The adjacent 22 megawatt coal plant and wind turbines are not included. About 80 percent of the ethanol facility is complete, but engineers caution on capacity due to lack of early involvement.
Hays city commissioners set a July 26 public hearing to condemn the downtown Opera House at 811 Fort owned by Liberty Group as further stone loss accelerates action. City staff reported a stone fell June 1 and more stones followed about 10 days later, prompting sidewalk barricades and extra fencing while formal procedures proceed.
Emergency Management Director Bill Ring chose to sound sirens Thursday evening for safety after calls to the Law Enforcement Center describing funnels rotation and debris clouds. Reports of tornadoes funnel clouds and 60 mph winds spread across Ness County with a spotter noting a large cone shaped funnel. Weather warnings centered near Hays High School as hail fell in Ness Ellis Bazine and Ness City.
Nex-Tech of Lenora a Rural Telephone subsidiary received the Governor's Award of Excellence at the Kansas Calvary Encampment in Manhattan Judge panel had named Nex-Tech among six finalists after a Topeka judging session. The firm has grown to 378 employees and a 19 million dollar payroll while expanding broadband to 39 000 households across 60 cities in 17 counties in western Kansas.
