The Kansas Army National Guard band from the 35th Infantry Division will perform July 15 at the La Crosse City Auditorium. The 48 piece band, headquartered in Olathe, joins a free concert sponsored by Rush County Chamber of Commerce and Rush County News. Awards for business of the year, businessperson of the year, and community leader and volunteer of the year will be presented. free tickets require a self addressed stamped envelope sent to Rush County.

Jayhawker Rodeo invites contestants for queen and princess titles. Princess candidates must be 16 to 15 years old, queen candidates single and 16 to 23. The event starts 8 am July 19 with horsemanship, interview, and a written test, with winners announced July 28 at the rodeo opening.
The Black Heritage Club of Great Bend hosts a Juneteenth celebration at Courthouse Square starting at 10 a.m. Saturday with food storytellers music and crafts. This year the Oscar Micheaux Independent Film Festival honors filmmaker Oscar Micheaux whose family lived in Great Bend. In San Jose a 9 year old girl who was abducted and held for two days helped police identify suspect David Montiel Cruz. He was arrested near the scene after a SWAT raid found him in an attic. Authorities say the motive appears sexual and evidence supports a sexual assault.
The TSA says nonlethal stun devices could deter hijackers and be allowed on some aircraft as a security layer. It deferred decisions on United Air Lines and Mesa Air Group pilot arming while outlining needed rules on training and storage.
